SUMMARY:Habitat Conservation Plan Community Meetings for Rural Landowners
DESCRIPTION:The Thurston County Habitat Conservation Plan is a long-range planning tool to protect federally listed prairie species while enabling continued development around the county. It will impact thousands of acres in Thurston County. Come learn how your rural and working lands can both provide habitat value and remain working farms and/or rural residential open space. If the HCP is lemons\, we’ll talk about how to make it lemonade. \nWashington State University and Thurston County will give a presentation\, and there will be a chance to talk to local agencies about your property and to find out what kind of conservation options are available for you. Contact Sierra Smith for more information at sierra.smith1@wsu.edu or leave him a voicemail at (360) 867-2165. \nThurston County is home to multiple federally-listed threatened and endangered species. The Endangered Species Act protections associated with these listings mean some property owners have federal rules and requirements to work through before they can break ground on building and property development projects. A Habitat Conservation Plan (HCP) is a technical study detailing how to offset development impacts on protected species and species habitats. \nCommunity meetings will be held on the following days and times:\n\nThursday September 29th\, Tumwater.  Brighton Park Grange\, 815 Brighton Park SW\, Tumwater 6:00-8:00 pm\nTuesday October 18th\, Tenino. Violet Prairie Grange\, 17028 Violet Prairie Rd SE\, Tenino 6:00-8:00 pm\nWednesday November 9th\, Rainer. Sportsman’s Club\, 404 Alaska St.\, Rainier 6:00-8:00 pm\n\nBring your questions. \nFood and drink provided.

SUMMARY:Agricultural Conservation Workshop Series: Conservation Easements
DESCRIPTION:Farmland loss has been significant in South Puget Sound and SW Washington. One hundred thousand acres (65%) were lost in Thurston County\, and 130\,000 acres (44%) in Lewis County\, since the 1950s. Residential development\, which is largely responsible\, also threatens rare open-space habitat\, such as dry prairies which have been reduced 1-3 percent of their historic range. \nThis Rural Conservation and Farmland Protection workshop will provide information in farmer-to-farmer format for protecting rural land\, such as Conservation Easements and Cost-Share programs. This first December workshop\, which will be followed by another in January\, will focus primarily on Conservation Easement essentials. \nWorkshop presenters include four farmer panelists\,  Jeff Swotek formerly with the Natural Resources Conservation Service\, and staff with Thurston County Community Planning\, WSU Extension\, Thurston Conservation District\, the Ecostudies Institute\, US Fish and Wildlife Partners Program. We may have a special guest from the nationally active “Partners for Conservation” program (https://partnerscapes.org/news/) which works with landowners on working lands conservation efforts.\n  \nFor further information please contact Sierra Smith: sierra.smith1@wsu.edu. \nTopics covered include:\n\nResults from a 2019 Conservation on Working Lands Survey in Thurston\, Pierce\, Mason\, Lewis\, Grays Habor and Pacific Counties\nConservation easements essentials – key topics for rural landowners to consider\nPanel discussion with farmers who have easements on their property\nDoes your property have the right ingredients to be a likely easement candidate?\n\nJoin the Meeting:\nhttps://wsu.zoom.us/j/93312245311?pwd=cENTNDlKY2NmbHU0cy8rTXhHNUgydz09 \nJoin from PC\, Mac\, Linux\, iOS\, or Android: https://wsu.zoom.us/j/93312245311?pwd=cENTNDlKY2NmbHU0cy8rTXhHNUgydz09 \nMeeting ID: 933 1224 5311 \nPasscode: 407003 \nPhone Call (long distance)\n+1 253 215 8782\n+12532158782\,\,93312245311# US (One Tap Mobile Call)

This field day will focus on grazing management for forage productivity and habitat\, and native seeding in grazed pastures\, and incentive programs that support actions to enhance native habitat. \nAttendees will learn about the sustainability of rangeland and rotational grazing systems from Washington State University (WSU) Extension\, the Natural Resource Conservation Service (NRCS)\, the Center for Natural Lands Management (CNLM)\, WSU Conservation Biology Lab\, and the Thurston Conservation District (TCD). Attendees will also learn about appropriate native seed mixes\, sowing rates and methods and opportunities to enhance the ecological value of working lands by seeding native species in pastures\, and rotational grazing. \nThis field day is co-hosted by the WSU\, CNLM\, NRCS\, and TCD\, and will be held at Violet Prairie Seed Farm (17843 Gibson Rd.\, Tenino\, WA 98589)\, with a visit to neighboring Fisher Ranch\, on July 16th from 5:00pm to 8:00pm. \nGrazing lands can make meaningful contributions to habitat and species conservation\, while providing viable business opportunities for farmers and ranchers in south Puget Sound and southwest Washington. We’ll talk about opportunities to recognize these twin contributions of working lands\, and ways to sustain viable farms and ranches while improving habitat value at the same time. \nDinner will be served\, and registration is free. SUMMARY:Ground to Glass: Sensory Evaluation of Beer from Local Malted Barley at the Tumwater Brewfest
DESCRIPTION:Do you know who grew your beer? Join local farmers\, local brewers\, and Washington State University Extension at the 2019 Tumwater Artesian Brewfest on August 17th to sample beers made from barley grown in the Chehalis Basin. This event is part of a WSU research effort to identify barley varieties best suited for craft brewing and distilling – specifically for unique flavors from malted barley. \nParticipating breweries include Top Rung\, Packwood Brewing Company\, Well 80\, Singing Hops\, and Three Magnets. The barley was grown by Brian Thompson and Bill Reisinger in Adna Washington (8 miles west of Chehalis\, WA) on productive\, beautiful Chehalis silt-loam soil – some of the best the region has to offer. Funding was provided by the Port of Olympia. \n \n  \n\nThis community tasting is the culmination of two years of field trials. The aim over the last two years has been to grow large fields of experimental barley for local brewers to experiment with. Barley grown in 2018 was evaluated by consumer panels in Pullman\, WA. Barley grown in 2017 was made into whiskey at Sandstone Distilling and evaluated for flavor compounds at the WSU Wine Science Center in Richland\, WA. The Tumwater Brewfest will compliment these sensory evaluations by allowing for a large-scale community tasting. \nIf you are interested\, join us at the Brewfest! Several breweries will be featuring beers made from the local barley. The same beer brewed from all four varieties will be served under the “Bring Brewing Back” tent\, where community members can complete a brief sensory analysis as part of this participatory research effort. By all means\, join us for a drink in the name of research and community economic development. \nSee more project information at: https://extension.wsu.edu/thurston/specialty-grain/.
