{"id":93,"date":"2013-11-13T14:51:25","date_gmt":"2013-11-13T22:51:25","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/extension.wsu.edu\/wahkiakum\/?page_id=93"},"modified":"2019-07-16T15:36:58","modified_gmt":"2019-07-16T22:36:58","slug":"whats4-h","status":"publish","type":"page","link":"https:\/\/extension.wsu.edu\/wahkiakum\/youth\/whats4-h\/","title":{"rendered":"What&#8217;s 4-H?"},"content":{"rendered":"<div class=\"cpb-row  pad-bottom gutter single\" style=\"\"><div class=\"cpb-row-inner\"><div class=\"cpb-column  one\" style=\"\"><div class=\"cpb-textblock cpb-item \"><p><\/p>\n<h2>4-H Mission<\/h2>\n<p>4-H empowers youth to reach their full potential, working and learning in partnership with caring adults.<\/p>\n<h2>4-H Vision<\/h2>\n<p>A world in which youth and adults learn, grow and work together as catalysts for positive change.<\/p>\n<p>As the youth development program of the nation\u2019s 109 land-grant universities and the Cooperative Extension System, 4-H fosters an innovative, \u201clearn by doing\u201d approach with proven results.\u00a0 The 4-H Study of Positive Youth Development, a longitudinal study conducted by the Institute for Applied Research in Youth Development at Tufts University, shows youth engaged with 4-H are:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Nearly two times more likely to get better grades in school;<\/li>\n<li>Nearly two times more likely to plan to go to college;<\/li>\n<li>41 percent less likely to engage in risky behaviors; and<\/li>\n<li>25 percent more likely to positively contribute to their families and communities.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<hr \/>\n<h3>What kinds of things can I do in 4-H?<\/h3>\n<p>4-H offers a wide variety of projects and activities, including workshops, conferences, camps, community service projects, and leadership development opportunities for both youth and adults at local, district, state, national, and international levels.\u00a0 Many projects and related curriculum are available in 4-H, under eight major project areas:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"wp-image-180  alignright\" src=\"https:\/\/wpcdn.web.wsu.edu\/wp-extension\/uploads\/sites\/2068\/2013\/10\/1.-WHS-Discharge-Survey-640x4271-396x264.jpg\" alt=\"Members working in a forest\" width=\"380\" height=\"253\" srcset=\"https:\/\/wpcdn.web.wsu.edu\/wp-extension\/uploads\/sites\/2068\/2013\/10\/1.-WHS-Discharge-Survey-640x4271-396x264.jpg 396w, https:\/\/wpcdn.web.wsu.edu\/wp-extension\/uploads\/sites\/2068\/2013\/10\/1.-WHS-Discharge-Survey-640x4271.jpg 640w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 380px) 100vw, 380px\" \/>Animal Sciences<\/li>\n<li>\u00a0Family and Consumer Sciences<\/li>\n<li>\u00a0Engineering Technology<\/li>\n<li>\u00a0Interdisciplinary<\/li>\n<li>\u00a0Environmental<\/li>\n<li>\u00a0Plant Sciences<\/li>\n<li>\u00a0Environmental Stewardship<\/li>\n<li>\u00a0Social Sciences<\/li>\n<li>\u00a0Expressive Arts<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>The 4-H program reaches out to kids and their families to build skills for life.\u00a0 4-H has a hundred different\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/extension.wsu.edu\/4h\/publications\/Pages\/default.aspx\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">hands-on projects<\/a>\u00a0to offer.<\/p>\n<h3>How do I join 4-H?<\/h3>\n<p>Membership is open to anyone age 5 and in kindergarten through 12th grade for most programs. Contact Carrie Backman, 4-H Educator, at WSU Wahkiakum County Extension.\u00a0 She will connect you with open clubs and other 4-H opportunities depending on your age and interests.\u00a0 For teen programs, contact Lisa Frink, program coordinator, to learn more about local projects and statewide teen camps and leadership opportunities.\u00a0 Please contact them at the contact information below.\u00a0 You can also drop by the office at 25 River Street, Suite E in Cathlamet, Monday through Wednesday 9 am to 3 pm.<\/p>\n<h3>How do I become a 4-H volunteer?<\/h3>\n<p>We have a strong need for caring, mentoring adults in the Wahkiakum 4-H program. Your\u00a0<strong><em>time<\/em><\/strong>,\u00a0<strong><em>knowledge<\/em><\/strong>\u00a0and\u00a0<em><strong>heart<\/strong><\/em>\u00a0for youth could make a big difference in the quality of life in your community.\u00a0 Washington State University Extension will provide you the support and training you\u2019ll need along the way.\u00a0 You will be a\u00a0<strong><em>valued partner<\/em><\/strong>\u00a0in helping grow kids.
