Observation Log<br \/>\n&#8211; Pencil<br \/>\n&#8211; Outdoor thermometer<br \/>\n&#8211; Coffee can<br \/>\n&#8211; Ruler<br \/>\n&#8211; Clear jar with flat bottom (spaghetti\/olive jar)<br \/>\n&#8211; Scissors<br \/>\n&#8211; Wide clear tape<br \/>\n&#8211; Two liter plastic bottle<br \/>\n&#8211; Construction paper<br \/>\n&#8211; Push pin<br \/>\n&#8211; Pencil with eraser<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><strong>Activity:\u00a0 Weather Logging<\/strong><br \/>\n<em>Explain to youth that a good observation log would include environmental records such as temperature, wind and precipitation.\u00a0 \u00a0Ask why that information could be important.<\/em><\/p>\n<p>What would be important about collecting a data of the weather?\u00a0 (ex: \u00a0daily highs and lows, checking against forecasts, \u00a0collecting at the same time each day).<\/p>\n<p>Youth can use the same calendar from other activities or an observation log to record their information.<\/p>\n<p>Comparing their own data with that of a qualified source will help raise worthwhile questions.<\/p>\n<p>There is no shortage of weather web sites available online.\u00a0 We recommend\u00a0 using the WSU AgWeatherNet <em>(linked in Explore More)<\/em> to get accurate readings for your county.\u00a0 Youth can check their data against the data available on the Washington Map by rolling their cursor over the weather stations near their location.\u00a0 Checking\u00a0 online data that is not a high or low should be done at relatively the same time each day to confirm accuracy.<\/p>\n<p>On windy days practice making wind assessments both from beaches and on land using the Beaufort scale. <em>(see below)<\/em><\/p>\n<p>Beaufort Wind Scale for Land<\/p>\n<p><em>Citation: From \u201cThe Power of Wind\u201d\u00a0 National 4-H Curriculum #\u00a0 08383<\/em><\/p>\n<p><strong>Important Tools:<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>Fahrenheit to Celsius<\/strong>\u00a0<strong>and Back Again<\/strong><\/p>\n<blockquote><p><strong><em>Formula: Convert Fahrenheit to Celsius<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n<p>1.
