These projects allow youth to decide:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul>\n<li>What you want to learn<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>What you want to do, and<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>How you want to share what you learn.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Create your project<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>adapted from Iowa State University Extension&#8217;s <a href=\"https:\/\/www.extension.iastate.edu\/4h\/self-determined\">guide for self-determined 4-H projects<\/a>.<em><br><\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong><strong>Step<\/strong> 1:<\/strong>\u00a0 Define your topic.\u00a0 What do you want to learn about or learn how to do?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul>\n<li>&#8220;I would like to learn about&#8230;&#8221;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>&#8220;I would like to learn to&#8230;&#8221;<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p><strong><strong>Step<\/strong> 2:<\/strong>\u00a0 Gather the information you will need by deciding where to get your information or references from.\u00a0 If you are finding your references online or from books and manuals, make a list so you can refer to them later if you need to check facts or go back for more information.\u00a0 Check to see if your sources are <em>reliable<\/em>&#8211;who wrote the information, and are they an authority on this subject?\u00a0 You can learn a little about the organization publishing an online source by looking at its web address.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul>\n<li>An educational institution, such as a college, university, or school, will have a website that ends in &#8220;.edu&#8221;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Websites run or funded by government agencies, such as NASA or the US Department of Agriculture, will end in &#8220;.gov&#8221;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Professional organizations, scientific and research societies, and nonprofit organizations will have websites identified by &#8220;.org&#8221;<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>Remember that 4-H projects should be backed by <em>research based<\/em> information, so try to find websites and books that list their sources!<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong><strong>Step<\/strong> 3:<\/strong>\u00a0 Decide what you will do with this information and create an action plan.\u00a0 What are you going to do with the information you collect?\u00a0 Are you going to present a poster, create a project for the fair or community display, or are you going to share it a different way?\u00a0 Set a deadline for the steps in your plan.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong><strong>Step<\/strong> 4:<\/strong>\u00a0 Anticipate challenges and roadblocks.\u00a0 What might you need to do if something gets in the way of completing your project?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong><strong>Step<\/strong> 5:<\/strong>\u00a0 Record the steps you take for your project and the materials you need or use.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong><strong>Step<\/strong> 6:<\/strong>\u00a0 Evaluate your process.\u00a0 Did you reach your goal within your timeline and by your deadline?\u00a0 Why or why not?\u00a0 What worked best, what didn&#8217;t work, and what did you learn from the process?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong><strong>Step<\/strong> 7:<\/strong>\u00a0 Share your project and what you&#8217;ve learned!<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong><strong>Step<\/strong> 8:<\/strong>\u00a0 Celebrate!<\/p>\n\n<\/div>\r\n\n\n<div class=\"wsu-column\"  style=\"\">\r\n\t\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\">\n<figure class=\"aligncenter size-large\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" width=\"792\" height=\"198\" src=\"https:\/\/wpcdn.web.wsu.edu\/extension\/uploads\/sites\/40\/2023\/12\/Self-Determined-792x198.png\" alt=\"At left, cartoon farm fields with a barn, horse, pig, cow, and chicken in the foreground.
