Youth may work at the level most appropriate for them. Each guide includes an achievement program to provide challenging activities, a way to expand project experiences beyond the animal and a means to recognize youth for what they have accomplished. The activities in this guide are specifically designed to help youth develop skills in decision making, relating to others, communicating with others and learning to learn.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n<section  class=\"wsu-section\"  >\r\n        \n\n<p>Please note there are age restrictions on this project area:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Youth must be 8 by October 1st of the current 4-H year to be eligible for:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul>\n<li>Competitive situations, such as livestock shows or sales<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong><em>Enrollment in large animal projects, including Beef, Dairy, Goat, Horse, Sheep, Alpaca\/Llama, and Swine<\/em><\/strong><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Enrollment in shooting sports projects<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Enrollment in projects using motorized vehicles<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Enrollment in food preservation projects<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>Cloverbuds (4-H youth ages 5-7) may participate in a number of age-appropriate activities, though they may not participate in competitive events.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>If you have questions about eligibility, please contact your county 4-H coordinator.<\/p>\n\n    <\/section>\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Objectives<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Youth will:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul>\n<li>Learn about swine breeds and how to select the breed best for their 4-H project<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Identify swine anatomy and identify how healthy swine look and behave<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Understand the selection, grooming, feeding, training and care of swine project animals<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Name and identify cuts of meat and discover pork and pork byproducts<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Prepare, show, and market their project animals at fair<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\">\n<figure class=\"aligncenter size-full\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/wpcdn.web.wsu.edu\/extension\/uploads\/sites\/40\/2023\/12\/pig-5893726_1280.jpg\" alt=\"A black pig laying on its side on a bed of straw looks at the camera\"\/><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">4-H Swine Curriculum<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Available in the Extension office or online.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/shop4-h.org\/collections\/swine-curriculum-collection\/products\/swine-curriculum-1-the-incredible-pig\">Level 1: The Incredible Pig<\/a><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Activities include naming breeds, learning swine body parts, judging market hogs, exploring a digestive system, examining a healthy pig, identifying pork cuts, and practicing fitting and showing.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/shop4-h.org\/products\/swine-curriculum-2-putting-the-oink-in-pig\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Level 2: Putting the Oink in Pig<\/a><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Activities in Swine 2 include managing baby pigs, balancing a ration, exploring swine diseases, preparing pork, discovering swine careers and packing a show box.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/shop4-h.org\/products\/swine-curriculum-3-going-whole-hog\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Level 3: Going Whole Hog<\/a><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Advanced youth will plan a breeding system, judge breeding gilts, design a swine operation, complete a job application, explore career opportunities and international markets plus many other challenging activities.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/shop4-h.org\/products\/swine-curriculum-helpers-guide\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Swine Helper&#8217;s Guide<\/a><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Packed with activities to involve the entire group.
