“By creating simple plantings that reflect the right plants in the right place, we can inspire others to convert another chunk of ground into an asset for our planet,” Nita said.

Access an extensive list of resources and inspiration that Nita has discovered while converting more and more of the suburban lot surrounding her house into better pollinator habitat. Researchers have documented that a succession of simple changes can lead to big results; ecological understanding serves us all, and plantings that benefit pollinators can be beautiful and a source of pride. Nita will discuss the steps in the process—planting plans, choosing the right plants, prepping the soil, seeding or transplanting, maintenance and planting at the right pace for you so you can take pride in the pollinator gardens you’ve created.

Nita was born into a vegetable gardening family and gardened successfully in the Willamette Valley in Oregon and Northern Minnesota but found initially that gardening in this area was more challenging. Nita taught in a public school alternative program and taught a K-8 gardening class that was one of the program offerings. When she retired after 30 years, Nita became a Jefferson County Master Gardener (class of 2013) and has been one of the instructors for the local Growing Groceries class for the past nine years. Year-round gardening, managing worm bins, supporting beneficial insects and native pollinators are her gardening priorities. She continues to value the great gardeners she meets and the life-long learning opportunity that gardening provides.

The Green Thumb Education Series, sponsored by the Washington State University Clallam County Master Gardeners, is held on the second and fourth Thursday of each month through October. In November, December, and January, one lecture is offered. Scheduled presentations are subject to change.
