Lessons from European Grasslands

Below are several resources developed for an Ethnoecology seminar series on Conservation Grazing held at the HUN-REN Centre for Ecology and Botany in Vacractot, Hungary from 6-7 October, 2025. These resources present a summary of results from an 8-month research tour of European grasslands and pastoral communities. They materials are organized by Cultural Context, Practices (Practical Context), Adoption Support, and Outlook for wider adoption of conservation grazing in terms of innovation diffusion.

Understanding CULTURAL CONTEXT is critical to finding the logical and practical strategies to integrate conservation and grazing.

GRAZING PRACTICES that support conservation takes many forms. This link provides examples, and groups ‘like’ approaches based on European people and landscapes.
