Youth must be 8 by October 1st of the current 4-H year to be eligible for enrollment in the Horse Project.

Cloverbuds (youth ages 5-7) are welcome to participate in the Horseless Horse project.

Objectives

The horse project enables members to learn responsibility through working with horses in Western, Gaming, English, etc.

Youth will:

  • Develop an appreciation of horseback riding as a healthy and wholesome form of recreation
  • Promote greater love for animals and a human attitude toward them
  • Develop an animal care ethic and learn to select care for, food, and provide for the health of an animal
  • Learn to ride, train, and handle a horse safely
  • Understand horse behavior, colors and markings, proper riding seat, and correct use of the aids
  • Learn to catch, groom, practice horsemanship, and handle and a ride a horse safely
  • Learn skills in horsemanship and an understanding of horse behavior, competition etiquette, and sportsmanship
