Become a WSU Master Gardener

Grow knowledge. Grow community. Grow something meaningful.

Why Become a Master Gardener?

Master Gardeners are community builders — people who love learning, love plants, and love helping others thrive. When you join the WSU Master Gardener Program, you’re not just improving your gardening skills. You’re helping neighbors, strengthening local ecosystems, and sharing knowledge that makes Walla Walla a healthier, more resilient place to live.

Your passion can spark someone else’s. That’s the heart of this work.

The Impact You’ll Make

As a Master Gardener volunteer, you help create lasting change in the community. You’ll support people who are planting their very first seed, families learning to grow food at home, and gardeners looking for sustainable, environmentally friendly practices.

Your service helps:
• Protect and restore natural resources
• Strengthen local food security
• Teach climate‑smart gardening skills
• Support healthy, vibrant neighborhoods
• Inspire lifelong learning in others

Every conversation, every plant clinic, every workshop makes a difference.

What You’ll Gain as a Volunteer

Becoming a Master Gardener is not just about what you give — it’s also about what you grow in yourself.

As part of the program, you will:
• Build deep gardening and horticulture skills
• Receive university‑supported training and resources
• Connect with a welcoming network of volunteers
• Participate in hands‑on projects that matter to you
• Gain confidence in teaching and advising others

You don’t need to be an expert. You just need curiosity, commitment, and a desire to help people.

Ways Master Gardeners Serve

There are many ways to share your knowledge once you complete training. You can choose the activities that feel most meaningful and work best for your schedule.

Master Gardeners often:
• Answer questions at plant clinics and community events
• Host classes and demonstrations
• Mentor new gardeners
• Offer guidance on composting, pest management, and water‑wise gardening

Every volunteer role helps grow a stronger, more informed gardening community.

Training: Learn, Explore, and Grow

New applicants participate in a comprehensive training program that covers everything from botany and soil science to diagnostics and sustainable practices. You’ll learn through self‑paced modules, activities, and guidance from WSU experts and experienced Master Gardeners.

The training prepares you to share research‑based, practical information with the public — and to feel confident doing it.

How to Join the Program

Becoming a Master Gardener is simple and supportive. Here’s the basic process:

  1. Express your interest. Add your name to the contact list to receive information about upcoming training cycles.
  2. Apply when training opens. Training sessions are offered every other year in Walla Walla County.
  3. Complete the training program. Learn core horticulture concepts and connect with fellow gardeners.
  4. Give back through service. Apply what you’ve learned by volunteering in your community.

We’ll guide you every step of the way.

You’ll Be Supported Throughout Your Journey

From your first day of training to your ongoing volunteer work, the WSU Master Gardener team supports you with:
• Resource materials and reference tools
• Experienced mentors
• Continuing education opportunities
• A strong, collaborative volunteer community

You’re never doing this alone.
