Master Gardener Volunteer Leadership Certificate

This new Master Gardener Volunteer Leadership certificate is designed to help experienced members learn more about Extension services and administration, as part of the AgriProspect’s Marketplace (a $10M project funded by the USDA/NIFA).  This is an innovative opportunity that expands the traditional scope of Master Gardener training.  This program is positioned as a leadership development initiative to empower experienced volunteers and deepen their understanding of Extension’s organizational structure, policies, and administrative processes, while also enhancing their capacity to serve as leaders within the Master Gardener community.  This approach ensures that Master Gardener volunteers are not only skilled educators but also effective leaders and ambassadors for Cooperative Extension.

Purpose and Goals

  • This certificate will support the Master Gardeners with increased opportunities to fulfill volunteer service hours to maintain good standing in the program, while achieving a certificate and digital credential known as a Merit
  • This certificate is designed to develop the leadership potential of seasoned Master Gardener volunteers, equipping them to assist Extension staff in managing local activities and improved programs or access to services.
  • It expands upon mission critical training to provide volunteers with a comprehensive overview of Extension services, administrative procedures, and the broader mission of Cooperative Extension, thus preparing them for advisory, planning, and leadership roles within the organization.

Key Features

  • Participants engage in specialized training sessions and in office activities that cover topics such as Extension administration, volunteer management, program planning, and evaluation.
  • The curriculum includes interactive teaching methods, group problem-solving, and hands-on practice in areas like delegation, administration, project or event management, and communication—skills essential for effective leadership.
  • Volunteers learn about the policies, reporting systems, and decision-making processes that underpin Extension programs, fostering a deeper appreciation for how their work aligns with community needs and organizational goals.

Volunteer Leadership Opportunities

  • Graduates of this certificate program may take on roles such as coordinating volunteer activities, leading committees, managing demonstration gardens, or serving on advisory boards.
  • The certificate program encourages experienced Master Gardeners to mentor new volunteers, facilitate meetings, and help plan and implement educational events.
  • Leadership volunteers are recognized as key partners in sustaining and growing the impact of Extension outreach, ensuring program continuity and resilience.

“This new leadership program for Master Gardener volunteers is an exciting step forward for our Extension community. It’s designed for those who want to go beyond horticultural expertise and become leaders who understand how Extension works from the inside out. Through a blend of advanced training in administration, volunteer management, and program planning, participants will not only strengthen their own skills but also help ensure the long-term success and sustainability of our Master Gardener initiatives. We’re building a network of knowledgeable leaders who can support Extension staff, mentor new volunteers, and help guide our programs to better serve the community,” according to Aaron Urseth, Master Gardener Program Coordinator

Benefits to the Community, Volunteers, and Extension

  • Volunteers gain advanced knowledge of Extension operations, which can be personally rewarding and enhance their sense of identity and contribution within the organization.
  • Extension benefits from a cadre of trained leaders who can help manage volunteer teams, extend the reach of educational programming, and provide valuable feedback for continuous improvement.
