Preserving our rare and endangered heirloom plants

A Master Gardener examines a bright orange tomato on a plant supported by a fence. The individual is wearing jeans, gardening gloves, a striped shirt and quilted work vest, jeans, and bright pink glasses.

This garden supports our Yakima Master Gardener Seed Library. Plants are selected because they are often rare and endangered varieties that grow well in our Yakima climates and soils.  Heirloom vegetables often taste much better and have other desirable characteristics because they are not trying to meet the demands of commercial production (such as ripening at the same time, uniform size/weights, extended shelf life to get to markets etc.)  This garden was started in  2014 in partnership with the North Yakima Conservation District.  All seeds, materials, and labor are donated by the Yakima Master Gardeners and supported by the Yakima Master Gardener Foundation.  Produce not used for seed collection is donated to local meal programs and food banks.
