Give Pulse – User Guide
Volunteer Time Tracking
WSU is now utilizing Give Pulse for 4-H volunteers to document the hours they spend working on behalf of Washington State 4-H Youth Development. Give Pulse replaces the volunteer hours database previously used. Volunteers must be approved in 4HOnline before they can utilize this program to record volunteer hours. In order for volunteers to be covered under WSU’s L&I insurance policy, volunteers must record their hours.
Getting Started
Your local Extension office will add you to the Give Pulse system, and you will receive a welcome email asking you to “Claim Your Account” after you become an approved volunteer.
If you did not receive an email please choose your county from the list located on our website to create an account on the correct Give Pulse group: https://extension.wsu.edu/4h/give-pulse-volunteer-hours/
Claim Your Account
There are two ways that you can create an account in Give Pulse for your County or tribal 4-H Program.
Look for an email invitation from your 4-H Office:
- Check your email inbox for an official invitation message from “Washington State University | GivePulse”. Click the verification link inside to set up your password.
- Click “Claim Your Account” (blue button) from the email sent to you. You will be directed to the Give Pulse website for Washington State University.
Claim your account manually (if no email is found.)
- Go to the main Give Pulse Login/Registration page
- Choose to log in or register using the same email address you used for 4-H Online.
- If you already have a general login or forgot your password, click “Forgot Password” under the email to trigger a reset link.
On the landing page click “Claim my account by setting a password”
- NOTE: “Claim my account using my Washington State University credentials” is only used for faculty and staff of WSU (has an email address @wsu.edu).
- On the next page; you will see the email address the invitation was sent to. If you’d like to change your email address first claim your account using the email address provided.
- Each 4-H volunteer will need to use their own unique email address to log their impact hours. Family members will not be able to share an account.
- Complete the sign-up page by:
- Entering your name and a password (including 8 characters of both letters & numbers).
- Entering your location.
- Agreeing to the terms of service.
Click the “Claim my account” button.
- On the next page you will have the option to link your GivePulse account to Facebook.
You may choose the button at the bottom to “skip this step” if you do not want the accounts linked (WSU recommends skipping this step and not liking your accounts).
Next you are able to choose a profile picture, if you’d like to. Click “Complete Registration” and you will be taken to your Give Pulse group page.
- Save this URL for easy access to your Give Pulse group page.
- Remember to save the email address and password for your account.
Register for an Event:
One of the features of Give Pulse is the ability to register for an event. An event refers to any time a volunteer spends working on behalf of Washington State 4-H Youth Development.
Events are set up by your local Extension office. How to register for an event:
- Navigate to your Give Pulse group, log in.
- Click “Events” to be shown a list of events available in your group.
- Choose the event, by clicking the highlighted name of the event. This will take you to the event information page.
- Register by clicking the green button “REGISTER” in the top right of the page.
- Click the date for the event, then continue. You can register for individual occurrences of the event, or all of them.
- To finish your registration, you will need to agree to the release forms at the bottom before you can click “continue”.
- You will now see a confirmation page that you are registered for the event, and others that also registered.
Record an Impact:
An impact in the Give Pulse system refers to the time you spend working on behalf of Washington State 4-H Youth Development, or more simply your volunteer hours.
- Navigate to your Give Pulse group, log in.
- Click “Add Impact” (a green button in the top right side of your group screen).
- If the event you attended is one you registered for, please select it from the top drop- down list, and choose the date you would like to record your impact.
- If you did not register (or the event is not listed) please skip the top section and continue to the next section to enter the date and time for your impact.
- If you are recording a multi-day event; please enter them separately. For each impact, your start and end date should be the same.
- If you do not select the same start/end date the system will record the full 24- hour period (or longer) not the actual hours volunteered.
- Next; enter the number of hours for your impact (rounded to the nearest quarter of an hour: (IE: 1.0, 1.25, 1.5, 1.75 hours).
- Enter the type of activity from the pull-down menu. Select the activity type that best fits your impact (a description of each is provided).
- Rate your experience with the event and provide reflections/comments for the group to see. Personal notes are available only to you, enter notes you might want to remember.
- Attach any items you’d like (pictures, agendas, etc…)
- Finally, click “Add Impact” (green button on the bottom left) to submit your hours.
NOTE: If you pre-registered for the event – you will still need to confirm you attended the event to have GivePulse record your impact (volunteer hours). You may receive an email to confirm you attended; in this case you do not need to complete the steps above after you confirmed the event through email.
Additional Information
All volunteer hours must be submitted every quarter to be counted by WSU 4-H. Additionally, you will still be able to see the total number of hours you have volunteered with Washington State 4-H Youth Development.
Remember: Your local Extension office is available to answer any questions you might have about Give Pulse. If you are unable to record your impact, please reach out for help.
