All 4-H youth members, volunteers and families are invited to attend the Yakima County Council meetings. Your input is greatly needed to make decisions on up coming events. Please consider joining us on May 19th at 6:30 pm in the Yakima County Resource Center – Large Conference Room, 2403 S. 18th Street Suite 100, Union Gap, WA.

Yakima County 4-H Committee Sign ups

Interested in helping make decisions at local 4-H events? Committees ensure that big changes and big events are managed by volunteers and members so that your voices are heard. Check out the Yakima 4-H committee options and sign up today, by going to the Yakima County 4-H Committees Google Form. Thank you for your willingness to volunteer!

Yakima County Leaders’ Council Documents Available on Google Drive

In efforts to keep our 4-H community actively involved with decision making process, the Yakima County Leaders’ Council Board members and Extension Office have teamed up in making our documents transparent to all through Google Drive. All meeting agenda, minutes & budgets can be found accessed by the public at all times through Google Drive. If you have anything that you would like to add to the next meeting agenda you may contact the 4-H Program Manager, Autumn at Autumn.Britt@wsu.edu or 509-574-1578.

4-H Clubs Facebook Groups

Facebook has proven to be a useful tool for reaching volunteers and parents. If your club or group has a Facebook page, please ensure the page is private, not public, to support youth safety. A private but searchable page will allow new member families and volunteers to find your page but stop unaffiliated public members from seeing youth photos or any identifying information you post when sharing contest results, meeting reminders, and more. All 4-H pages should have at least three admins: two enrolled volunteers and the 4-H office. Invite the 4-H office as an admin member of the group, by copying the link to your group and emailing it to Yakima.4h@wsu.edu. The 4-H office’s role is not to run your club’s page but to help manage a page transition if required during leadership changes and support with set-up as needed.

Does your club want to start a Facebook group? Let us know! The 4-H office can create a group for your club under our main page, saving you the trouble of clicking all the right privacy boxes and setting up admins.

Updated Safety Policy Training for Volunteers – Due June 1st, 2025

We want to inform about updated safety policy (WSU Protection and Safety of Minors), which is now being implemented across all WSU programs, including Washington 4-H. Since it was written primarily for WSU campus employees, some parts may feel less relevant to 4-H, so we created a 15-minute training to guide you through what matters!  All 4-H Volunteers in Washington are asked to complete the training by June 1st, 2025. The online training linked below is the quickest training option and doesn’t require any logins. If you would rather complete this training in-person or via Zoom with local staff please reach out to Autumn Britt, our local Program Manager, at Autumn.Britt@wsu.edu or 509-588-7817 (work cell, text/call).

The quick training is available online and covers the key points of select topics within EP-14, including:

  • Conduct Requirements for Staff and Certified Volunteers
  • Adequate Supervision of Youth
  • Specific Requirements for Transportation Involving Youth
  • Specific Requirements for Overnight Activities Involving Youth
  • Disability Accommodations
  • Youth Program Registration
  • Reporting Requirements

The whole policy document can be found on the WSU policies website. We appreciate your time and dedication to keeping 4-H a safe, welcoming space for youth. If you have any questions, reach out to your local 4-H office.

How to Record an Impact on GivePulse

An impact in the GivePulse system refers to the time you spend working on behalf of Washington State 4-H Youth Development, or more simply your volunteer hours. Watch this video on how to create an impact (log your volunteer hours) in GivePulse.

  1. Log in to GivePulse here.
  2. Click “Add Impact” (a green button in the top right side of your group screen).
  3. Enter the date and times for your impact. *This data is critical for us to report your hours to our stake-holders and partners.
  1. Next; enter the number of hours for your impact (rounded to the nearest quarter of an hour: (Example: 1.0, 1.25, 1.5, 1.75 hours).
  2. Enter the type of activity from the pull-down menu. Select the activity type that best fits your impact (a description of each is provided).
  3. Rate your experience with the event and provide reflections/comments for the group to see.
  4. Personal notes are available only to you, enter notes you might want to remember.
  5. Attach any items you’d like (pictures, agendas, etc.)
  6. Click “Add Impact” (green button on the bottom left) to submit your hours.

Volunteers: YOUR TIME MATTERS TO US

Every hour you spend supporting 4-H is a donation. All certified 4-H volunteers are required to report hours; reporting protects and supports you and the local program!

By reporting your hours you give Yakima County 4-H the numeric proof we need to show our funders and higher-officials that our programs are greatly valued and needed. In addition, reporting your hours makes you eligible for the Department of Labor and Industries medical aid program (this program allows an injured volunteer’s medical expense to be paid by the Dept. of Labor and Industries), and allows you protection under the state of Washington tort claims law, RCW 4.92.060, for acts or omissions while performing, or in good faith purporting to perform, your official volunteer duties. What qualifies as volunteer hours? Anything and everything you do for 4-H! Teaching, planning, prepping, shopping, helping at fair and other events, paperwork, training, driving, calling, mentoring, presenting, emailing, even reading this counts! Email Katlyn at Yakima.4H@wsu.edu or call 509-574-1600 if you need assistance.

Yakima County 4-H Volunteers Background Checks Need Renewed Every 3 Years

It has been brought to our attention that our background check server, Sterling Volunteers, email delivery feature is not functioning properly. Thus, volunteers are not being notified to renew their background checks despite us sending communications – simply due to a system malfunction. The WA State 4-H office has determined this being a new issue due to the Sterling Volunteers being bought out by another facility and are working to have this corrected. We appreciate your patience and understanding, our apologies for not catching this error sooner.

In order to be a certified 4-H Volunteer, all adults (18+) must have a background check completed. WSU has contracted with a third-party, Sterling Volunteers, to conduct these background checks at no cost to our volunteers. We ask that you please complete this screen as soon as possible; your enrollment status for this year cannot be approved without a completed background screening & failure to complete the screen may result in your enrollment being suspended.

There are a few items to be aware of before completing your background check:

  •  Sterling Volunteers recently purchased Verified Volunteers. There are still some references to Verified Volunteers on the webpages in the link. No need for concern if you see Verified Volunteers.
  • Federal legislation providing permissions to complete background checks on employees and volunteers is found in the Fair Credit Reporting Act. Therefore, Sterling Volunteers requires you to read and verify that you have read the language. WSU will NOT collect credit information.
  • Sterling Volunteers requires a Social Security Number (SSN) to complete a comprehensive screen. Sterling Volunteers has information on the security of your information that you can read before you enter any personal information.
  • You may be asked to supply a Good Deed code; if so, our Good Deed code is: ad5e25d

If your background check needs renewed you will have received an email from the Yakima County 4-H Specialist, Katlyn for a link to complete your background check. In the case that you cannot find this email in your inbox, please be sure to check your junk and spam folder. For questions or concerns feel free to contact us at Yakima.4H@wsu.edu or by calling 509-574-1600.

Volunteer Education Committee Opportunity

The 4-H Volunteer Education Committee will be reconvening in May to review previous volunteer education plans, make revisions, and move forward a final 4-H Volunteer Education Plan. Over the last few years, we have lost two volunteers off the committee; we believe volunteer input is beneficial and are recruiting a few good volunteers to join the committee. This committee meets in the early evening hours via Zoom and it is anticipated that there will be two 1 ½ hour meetings per month until October. If you are interested, of if you know of a volunteer that would be a great addition, please contact Jana Ferris at ferrisj@wsu.edu or 509-335-7109.
