Set up a new EIN for a 4-H Club or Project
Checklist
The steps to establish a new EIN for a 4-H club are as follows:
- Visit the IRS website at Set up an EIN with IRS
- Call to make an appointment to use an Extension office computer.
- Click “Begin Application”
- “What type of legal structure is applying for an EIN?” Choose “View Additional Types including Non-Profit/Tax-Exempt Organizations”, click “Continue”
- “Additional Types” Choose “Other Non-Profit/Tax-Exempt Organizations” click “Continue”
- “Please confirm your selection” You should be on the Non-Profit/Tax-Exempt Organizations page, if this is correct click “Continue”
- “Why is the Non-Profit/Tax-Exempt Organization requesting an EIN?”Choose “Banking Purposes”, click “Continue”
- “Who is the Responsible Party for the Non-Profit/Tax-Exempt Organization?” Choose “Individual”, click “Continue”
- “Please tell us about the Responsible Party” this is your General Leader’s name, SSN, address, etc.
- “Tell us more about the Non-Profit/Tax-Exempt Organization” There will be 5 questions, click “No” on each one, click “Continue”
- “What does your business or organization do” choose “Social assistance”, click “Continue”
- “You have chosen social assistance” Choose “Youth Services”, click “Continue”
- “Choose how to receive confirmation letter” You can either receive it immediately via PDF, print it or you can have a hard copy mailed to you, this can take up to 4 weeks. Carefully review your information, if it is correct, click “submit”, if not, you will need to start a new application.
- Once you receive an EIN number, contact your bank and supply them with your new EIN for tax identification. Be sure to let them know that you are a non-profit 4-H club, if they have any fees, ask if they will waive them for your club.
- Please provide a copy of the EIN confirmation letter to the 4-H office for your club’s files.
- New Annual IRS Electronic Filing Requirement for Small Tax-Exempt Organizations
- Small tax-exempt 4-H organizations that earn less than $50,000 will be required to file an annual electronic notice called an e-Postcard. Organizations that do not file the notice will lose their tax-exempt status.
- If the 4-H Club or affiliated 4-H organization raises:
- Less than $50,000 but more than $0 – they are required to file Form 990-N, Electronic Notice (e-Postcard) for Tax-Exempt Organizations not Required To File Form 990 or 990-EZ
- $0 – but plan to raise funds in the future and wish to retain inclusion under the National 4-H Group Exemption Number – they are required to file Form 990-N, Electronic Notice (e-Postcard) for Tax-Exempt Organizations not Required To File Form 990 or 990-EZ
- $0 – and have no plans to raise funds – they are not required to file
