History of this Award
Mr. Franklin was an outstanding example of how a 4-H leader can influence a child’s life in a very positive way. He was a leader for 25 years and encouraged all children living on Lopez to be involved in the 4-H program. This award was developed in 1974 with the support of his family.
Award Amount and Selection
The San Juan County 4-H Leaders Council (with funds from the Livestock Market Auction Committee) awards $1000 per year. The award may be split between deserving candidates.
Eligibility
Applicant must have completed the first year and no more than your junior year of advanced education (trade school or accredited college). You may also apply during your senior year if you have a fifth year as an undergraduate (Super Senior). Must have been a 4-H member in good standing in your Junior and Senior year in high school. An applicant may apply for and be awarded repeatedly as long as they meet the eligibility criteria.
Purpose of Award and Deadline information
The award will be given to the candidate who most exemplifies the essential character of a 4-H’er (trustworthy, respectful, responsible, fair, caring, good citizen) and on your educational goals. The leaders Council will have applications available on May 1st on this page or the 4-H Extension Office. The application must be turned into the Extension office on or before July 15th. If the application is mailed it must be postmarked on or before July 15th. The selection committee will announce its award at the 4-H Awards Ceremony at the San Juan County Fair.
