4-H Project Leader

Position Description

When interacting with youth and adults, please keep in mind the Essential Elements of Positive
Youth Development (Belonging, Mastery, Independence, and Generosity), and create
opportunities for others to experience them.

Engaging with youth:

  • Helps members to: identify project goals, create plans to reach them, and understand
    project requirements.
  • Consults, and uses as appropriate, 4-H curriculum to teach project skills.
  • Uses a variety of teaching methods—discussions, workshops, exhibitions, judging,
    educational tours, demonstrations, and record keeping.
  • Encourages members to participate in 4-H project events and to exhibit their project at
    the San Juan County Fair.
  • Holds project meetings to help members learn and to complete their 4-H projects.
  • Supports 4-H members in successfully completing their 4-H year.
  • Teaches judging skills.
  • Helps members with the project section of their record book.

Engaging with Parents/Guardians

  • Works with parents during project selection and decision-making.
  • Informs them of project expectations and opportunities.
  • Keep them informed of project work and plans.

Engaging with the County 4-H Program

  • Participates in Leaders Council and county project committees (livestock, horse, home
    economics, dog, rabbit/poultry/cavy, etc.) if one exists.
  • Participates in Livestock Market Animal Auction Committee (LMAAC) if project area is
    included in the live auction.

Engaging with WSU Extension

  • Keeps informed of current developments within the 4-H program and your project
    area(s).
  • Fulfills all volunteer requirements (for example: current enrollment, background check,
    reporting volunteer hours, completing required training) as defined by the WSU
    Extension Office and WA State 4-H.
  • Coordinates with local WSU Extension Office to complete three hours of continued
    education that relates to volunteer work each 4-H year.
  • If project area has a bank account, fulfills annual financial reporting requirements as
    defined by WSU Extension and WA State 4-H.
