Agroforestry Design: Farm Assessment and Site Plan

This full-day workshop will be an opportunity for planning professionals and producers to learn about designing agroforestry projects in the San Juan Islands. Agroforestry offers farmers practical ways to integrate trees and shrubs into working lands—from combining trees with livestock or crops to establishing productive buffers along waterways. Thoughtful design can add new farm products while improving shade and shelter, soil and water health, habitat, and overall farm resilience. The workshop will provide an overview of three types of agroforestry systems: alley cropping, silvopasture, and riparian forest buffers. Speakers will address species selection for both native and non-native trees based on soil moisture, project area, cooperator goals, and more. Participants will come together to create agroforestry designs for an active project site.

Agroforestry Northwest (AFNW) is partnering with the San Juan Islands Conservation District (SJICD) and Washington State University – San Juan County Extension (WSU) to host this event. Agroforestry Northwest (AFNW) is a leader in advancing agroforestry across the Pacific Northwest, bringing two decades of regional experience to the growing movement for resilient, productive, and ecologically sound landscapes. AFNW’s mission is to expand the understanding and adoption of agroforestry throughout the West Coast by connecting practical land stewardship with deep ecological and cultural knowledge.

This workshop will be led by AFNW experts in agroforestry, Indigenous ethnobotany and land history, ecology, wetlands, and forestry. Participants will gain an interdisciplinary perspective on how agroforestry can strengthen working lands.
