Washington State University (WSU) San Juan County  Extension Master Gardener (EMG) Program Application Process 2025-2026

The WSU San Juan Extension Master Gardener (EMG) Program is a volunteer program for people with a passion for plants, a drive to learn and a commitment to serving our community. Qualified applicants may have little experience or knowledge about horticulture, or they may have a lot, but all have a desire to learn and to share their knowledge with our community.

Process:

EMG journey begins with an intensive, fast-paced training spanning October 2025 through February 2026 – 19 weeks in duration. Training combines 12 weekly online modules accessed through WSU’s Green School and San Juan County EMG in-person trainings/field trips.

Major topics include:

Native Plants – Vegetables in Western WA – Tree Fruits and Small Fruits – Plant Problem Diagnosis – Soil and Composting – Plant Propagation – Weed Management and Pesticides – Lawns – Entomology – Urban Trees/Tree Pruning

Online course:

Participants engage with weekly online learning modules, including: optional Q&A Zoom sessions, a 29-chapter manual, corresponding quizzes, and a final exam (all open book). Feedback from past participants indicate weekly modules took between 3 and 6 hours. Passing score for quizzes and the final exam must be 80% or higher.

In Person Trainings:

In person training is held on Saturdays: October 4, 25, January 24, February 21, March 7, 21, 28 and April 4th. Details, time and locations TBA. Ferry travel may be required.  Applicants must commit to attend all 7 in-person trainees. Please consult with the Program Coordinator to discuss potential conflicts.

Costs & Fees:

The total cost of EMG training is $275. A required background check costs an additional $15 and requires submitting personal information online including your social security number.

Computer access:

Participants must have computer experience and feel comfortable navigating the internet and using email. Participants will need access to a computer for extended periods.

Internship:

Upon successful completion of training, volunteers begin a one-year internship during which they are required to serve at least 40 volunteer hours on projects such as the answer clinic, Ask A Master Gardener events, tending demonstration gardens, youth and adult education – to name just a few of the many volunteer opportunities.

After the internship year, veteran EMGs serve at least 25 volunteer hours each year, in addition to 10 continuing education hours, to retain EMG certified status.
