Lopez Heritage Apple Orchard
Located in Lopez Village, the orchard features heritage apple trees with informational signage and a bench. Master Gardeners grafted the trees in 2017 and installed the orchard in March 2018. The orchard is open to the public and is located next to the Lopez Historical society.
San Juan Island Demonstration Garden
Master Gardeners tend and harvest fresh produce for the Food Bank from the garden located on the Mullis Community Senior Center’s property in Friday Harbor. The garden has raised beds, a hoop house, compost bins and is tended year-round by Master Gardeners. Each year 1,500 pounds of fresh produce is donated to the Food Bank from this project and Master Gardeners home gardens.
Summer Garden Camp
Each summer, Master Gardeners partner with Island Rec to provide weekly hands-on gardening activities for day campers attending Camp Eagle Rock. Camp activities include planting, watering, tending the garden and culminates with a garden-grown salad feast. The garden is located at the Friday Harbor Elementary school.
Spring Plant Sales
Each May, Master Gardeners offer heirloom vegetable starts and perennials well suited for our island ecosystems. Master Gardeners choose the varieties, start the plants from seeds and tend the starts until the two sales which happen on San Juan and Orcas islands.
Workshops
Master Gardeners offer both in person and online workshops. In person workshops are held on topics such as Mason Bees, Insects in the Garden, Native Plant Gardening and more. Every fall, we offer a Workshop series on line via zoom webinar.
Native Plant Sale
Master Gardeners host a pre-order Native Plant sale in January with pick-up in mid-March. Plant selections include bare-root plants in bundles of 5 which makes for an affordable way for islanders to add more natives to landscapes.
Ask a Master Gardener
Master Gardeners are available April-September throughout the islands at Ask a Master Gardener events. To find an upcoming event near you, check out our event listing on this website.
Plant Clinic
Master Gardeners can help answer your plant questions. Submit a plant problem form along with photos and a sample to the Master Gardeners and they will help you find answers.
School Garden support
Orcas Master Gardeners support several youth gardening projects including Orcas Island elementary school by maintaining a native plant demonstration garden, and by helping OIC students connect to their school garden through hands-on classes.
