Remembering Robert Ford

We are sad to share that one of our friends of 4-H, Robert Ford has recently passed. Robert made a great impact on the community through his career as an educator & volunteer, leaving a positive impact on others around him. Rob will certainly be missed by many.

If you would like to leave a note within his virtual guestbook or send flowers to the family or plant a tree in memory of Robert, please visit the Yakima Herald tribute store.

Updated Safety Policy Training for Volunteers – Deadline was June 1st, 2025

We want to inform about updated safety policy (WSU Protection and Safety of Minors), which is now being implemented across all WSU programs, including Washington 4-H. Since it was written primarily for WSU campus employees, some parts may feel less relevant to 4-H, so we created a 15-minute training to guide you through what matters!  All 4-H Volunteers in Washington were asked to complete the training by June 1st, 2025. The online training linked below is the quickest training option and doesn’t require any logins. If you would rather complete this training in-person or via Zoom with local staff please reach out to Autumn Britt, our local Program Manager, at Autumn.Britt@wsu.edu or 509-588-7817 (work cell, text/call).

The quick training is available online and covers the key points of select topics within EP-14, including:

  • Conduct Requirements for Staff and Certified Volunteers
  • Adequate Supervision of Youth
  • Specific Requirements for Transportation Involving Youth
  • Specific Requirements for Overnight Activities Involving Youth
  • Disability Accommodations
  • Youth Program Registration
  • Reporting Requirements

The whole policy document can be found on the WSU policies website. We appreciate your time and dedication to keeping 4-H a safe, welcoming space for youth. If you have any questions, reach out to your local 4-H office.

All meeting agenda, minutes & budgets can be found accessed by the public at all times through Google Drive. If you have anything that you would like to add to the next meeting agenda you may contact the 4-H Program Manager, Autumn at Autumn.Britt@wsu.edu or 509-574-1578.

Washington State 4-H Office Recommends Biosecurity Measures for Youth Exhibitors at Shows and Fair

There has been a recent detection in Washington state of porcine reproductive and respiratory syndrome (PRRS). The new detection was in central Washington with hogs intended for exhibition. This is not a new disease and has been documented in the US and Washington. The information below because of the recent detection is an awareness of the precautions that should be taken for swine health (for both adult and youth producers). Unlike swine flu this is not zoonotic so there is no concern of human health.

It is a virus that will affect reproduction and respiratory systems of the infected animals It is highly contagious, so elevated biosecurity practices need to be a priority. Hogs of any age are susceptible. The disease can be managed through stringent biosecurity practices, targeted vaccine, and selection for herd immunity.

Mid-western swine operations deal with this on a regular basis due to swine population numbers and proximity of operations. A benefit in the northwest is the low population density. However, during the late spring through the fall, fair pigs change that dynamic. Risk is elevated in our state during this time of year as result of the transient nature of livestock exhibitions.

For youth exhibitors at shows and Fairs (best practices)

Biosecurity –

  • Don’t mingle animals
  • Have dedicated barn clothes that are only for your operation
  • If new animals or animals that have left the home site and come back isolate (30 days)
  • Limit access to your animals
  • Limit visitation to other operations/animal holding facilities
  • Clean and disinfect shared equipment properly
  • Clean and disinfect when returning from a show properly
  • Observe animals for signs of illness and/or change in behavior
  • Isolate
  • Address (confirm a problem exists, treat appropriately, observe pen mates for illness)
  • Establish a vet client patient relationship (VCPR)
  • Know who to call when there is a concern
  • This will help to stop and/or reduce the spread
  • Please be aware of these best practices to stop the mitigate disease spread.
  • Address (confirm a problem exists, treat appropriately, observe pen mates for illness)
  • Establish a vet client patient relationship (VCPR)

Check out A Champion’s guide to Youth Swine Exhibition (PDF) the Tool Kit for swine exhibitors from the National Pork Board website.

Information on all diseases of heightened concern for our state is located at the Washington State Department of Agriculture – Animal Health Program Webpage.
