Food Safety & Food Preservation

Food Safety Classes

ServSafe is a nationally recognized food safety training and certification program for anyone involved in the food service industry. The training is for food service managers who have responsibility for teaching, learning or implementing food preparation and food safety practices in their food business.  It is the highest standard in food safety training and certification.

Food Code – WAC 246-215-2107- requires food establishments to have at least one Certified Food Protection Manager on staff with a valid certificate.  This ServSafe training and a passing test score fulfills the requirement for the Certified Food Protection Manager training.  Successful completion of the course includes a ServSafe certificate for five years.  If you renew your Food Workers card within two years, it will also be extended for five years.

If you have questions about the Certified Food Protection Manager requirements for your business, please contact your local Health Department.

If you have questions about the ServSafe training, please call Margaret Viebrock, WSU Extension and ServSafe Instructor at 509-745-8531.

Food Preservation

Is Your Pressure Canner Ready for Harvest Season?

Before you preserve this year’s garden harvest, make sure your pressure canner gauge is accurate. An inaccurate gauge can lead to unsafe food preservation. USDA and WSU Extension recommend having pressure canner gauges tested every year to ensure they are working properly and helping you preserve food safely.

WSU Extension offers this service at no cost. To schedule your free pressure canner gauge test, call either the Wenatchee office at 509-667-6540 or the Waterville office at 509-745-8531.

If you have questions about preserving foods or want to inquire about future food preservation classes, please contact: Margaret Viebrock, Douglas County Extension: (509) 745-8531 or viebrock@wsu.edu
