Demonstration Gardens

Experience sustainable gardening firsthand in our outdoor classroom gardens. Master Gardeners showcase techniques like water-wise landscaping, using native and drought-tolerant plants/plantings, pruning techniques, and landscaping to offer the public opportunities to choose their gardens and yards. Master Gardeners are available to make presentations to groups or to individuals in formal or informal settings or at our two demonstration gardens in Moses Lake and Othello, both of which are free to visit and are open year-round.

Native and drought-tolerant plants are illustrated in demonstration gardens open to the public in front of the Moses Lake Public Library and behind the Old Hotel Art Gallery in Othello. Each site is free to visit and has examples of the types of plants, many of which are labeled that are adapted to our desert climate

Moses Lake Demonstration Garden

Master Gardeners are shown in their element, marveling, weeding, shoveling mulch, and doing maintenance.

Moses Lake demonstration garden

The Moses Lake demonstration garden is located next to the public library at 418 E. 5th Ave in Moses Lake. There is a native plant garden that is not irrigated and a drought-tolerant garden irrigated with drip tubing. The native plant section was established in 2010, and a non-contiguous drought-tolerant segment was planted in 2006. A third section is being planned for plantings in 2025.
Master Gardeners perform maintenance and improvement activities as needed. A descriptive sign describes the garden. Many plants are individually labeled. A color leaflet, available from the Master Gardeners, is free and can be picked up at the library.

Othello Demonstration Garden

The Othello demonstration garden is tucked into a corner of the property at the Old Hotel Art Gallery located at 33 Larch Street, Othello. It is a drought-tolerant garden marginally irrigated with drip tubing.
Establishing the garden has been a way to educate people on plants adapted to our arid climate, promote water conservation, and the proper use of pesticides. The garden was begun with a grant from the King County Master Gardener Foundation and the Grant-Adams Master Gardener Foundation in 2009.

The Othello Demonstration Garden consists entirely of drought-tolerant plants watered with drip lines. It is located on the property behind the Old Hotel Art Gallery.
