WASHINGTON STATE FAIR – Message from Tom Gwin

At 4 p.m. today (Wednesday, July 8, 2020), the Washington State Fair announced the cancellation of the 2020 fair.

This will result in the cancellation of the face-to-face Washington State 4-H Fair for 2020 as well. The WA State 4-H Fair Board has been meeting and will continue meeting over the next two week to determine what fair activities and exhibits can be conducted virtually. Several factors will be considered before making a final decision. The results of our deliberations will then go out to our 4-H family no later than July 25.

Best Regards,

Tom Gwin

State 4-H Fair Manager

National 4-H Council Announces Tractor Supply Company Summer Online Campaign

From Sara Hutches, 4-H Council:

As many of you know, this spring, the Tractor Supply Company (TSC) Spring Paper Clover campaign was postponed as we waited to see how the COVID pandemic would unfold.  We were hopeful that this would be a short interruption and we’d be able to continue as planned.  Unfortunately, months later, many of 4-H programs are restricted from in-person programming and stores are still working to minimize face to face customer interaction.  The more we explored options around rescheduling, the more it became clear that we needed to go in a different direction, one that doesn’t depend on in-person interaction and that wouldn’t jeopardize the success of the Fall Paper Clover Campaign by having too many similar customer asks in a short time frame.

As a result, we are excited to announce that TSC is working with us to host a 100% online fundraising campaign this summer.  From July 15-26, 2020 customers can donate at online check out   This should work for both online (shipped) purchases and curbside pickup.  The funds for this campaign will be distributed to local 4-H programs via the Fourward Fund.

We’ve done a little bit with TSC in online fundraising before, but nothing near this extensive.  We are excited to use this challenging time period to see how we can grow digital point-of-sale fundraising so that when we return to a “normal” Paper Clovers campaign, we can apply those learnings.

This all being said, we are full steam ahead planning for Fall Paper Clover. The dates are the same as before, 10/7/20-10/18/20.  TSC is planning on providing additional promotion to try to make it a huge kickoff to the 4-H year.  We are hopeful that we will be able to have kids in-store, but may need to consider alternatives at that time.

We will provide social graphics to help in promoting the Summer online donation campaign digitally, but those won’t be ready until right before the campaign begins.  In addition, because this is different than our regular Paper Clover campaign and entirely digital, we don’t expect individual clubs and
4-Hers to participate like normal, just have them mark their calendars for the fall.

Thanks again for your flexibility and patience!

Our New State Ambassador Program – Moving Forward With a Clear Vision In 2020!

The Washington 4-H State Ambassadors have a new team of youth leaders from all 4 districts!

They are:

NW District: Samantha Ollis, Danaya Snavely, and Raya Jakobsen.

SW District: Raegan Boyse, Bethany Jacks, Camille Talbot, Mariah Moran, and Sara Baldwin.

SE District: Alana Phillips, Riley Ziegler, Chloe Clyburn, Tori Gutierrez, and Elsie Cziske.

NE District: Peyton Distad, Hayley McDonald, and Peter Minick.

The team also includes state ambassador alumni Hannah Lea and Victoria D’Arienzo as planning team members, as well as Hailey Fagerness and Grant Hollar serving as team support consultants.

Our state ambassadors have chosen to start their work by focusing their action projects in the following areas: Increasing 4-H Awareness, Increasing Teen Involvement in 4-H, and Positive Community Support. Better networking with youth leaders from all over the state is a key priority, as it will allow the team to help them further strengthen the skills and contributions they can provide in their own counties.

We will continue to work together virtually using Zoom video conference calls and our Slack discussion group and will add in-person activities when this becomes possible.

Senior 4-H members interested in becoming an active member of the SA team can email 4-H State Ambassadors at wasa.4h@wsu.edu.

National 4-H Council Shares Survey on COVID-19 Effects on Youth Mental Health and Loneliness

A new survey commissioned by National 4 H Council, and conducted by the Harris Poll, finds that 7 in 10 teens are struggling with their mental health in the wake of COVID-19.  More than half of those surveyed shared that the pandemic has increased their feelings of loneliness, with 64 percent believing it will have a lasting impact on their mental health. The survey, conducted in May 2020, is among the first to examine the impact this unprecedented public health crisis has had on U.S. teens.  The aims of the survey are to help practitioners gain a deeper understanding of the state of teen mental health and to gather teen perspectives on the issue as 4-H aims to empower young people with the resources and support to address their health and well-being head on.
