Nutrition Gardening

The Pend Oreille County SNAP-Ed program utilizes gardens at each school district and at each learning location on the Kalispel Tribe of Indians Reservation. These gardens provide a unique nutrition learning experience, helping participants understand how local foods are grown, the nutrient value in fruits and vegetables and how to grow their own gardens. We use fresh garden produce for recipes and tastings with all our participants.

For a lot of Pend Oreille County residents, it can be difficult to access fresh produce, due to the remoteness of our community, lack of resources or inclement weather. SNAP-Ed gardening classes also help improve access to local, fresh produce throughout the calendar year.

SNAP-Ed in Pend Oreille County collaborates with the Washington State University Pend Oreille County Extension Master Gardeners and also with the Federally Recognized Tribal Extension Program in gardening education.

There are many opportunities in the spring, summer and fall to join in on nutrition education through gardening. Please contact the WSU Pend Oreille County Extension office for a list of when these classes will be available.
