WSU Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program Education

is funded by a federal grant from the USDA’s Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program.  The SNAP-Ed program teaches youth and adults with limited incomes to develop skills and behaviors to eat healthfully. Families learn nutrition basics and smart buying strategies to provide participants with the knowledge to make healthy choices and sustain their food supply throughout the month.

SNAP-Ed Educators provide high quality, educational and fun nutrition classes. Each school district has a school garden and staff of volunteers that add to the curriculum features of the program. Students are encouraged to try fresh, new foods as well as understand the nutritional qualities they offer. Our state approved curriculum provides ongoing learning from Kindergarten through 12th grade. SNAP-Ed is offered in the Newport, Cusick, and Selkirk school districts.

Strong community partnerships allow nutrition education to be delivered in non-school settings as well. Practical information is provided for adults wanting to eat healthier and stretch their food dollar. WSU Extension SNAP-Ed staff work with food banks, parents of youth in schools, and the Kalispel Tribe of Indians in Pend Oreille County by providing practical, hands on information about healthy food choices and how to make the most of foods on hand.

Seasonal Produce Guide

SNAP-Ed helps people support their local economy and eat healthy. Farmers markets are a great way to support local farms. They are also a great place to get fruits and veggies! Fruits and veggies cost less when they are in season.
