Living on the Land Workshops: Seed Saving 101- Part One

This Living on the Land Workshop is brought to you by the Organic Seed Alliance in partnership with WSU Regional Small Farms. Part one of this two-part series will serve as an intro to the practice of seed saving and the various skill sets and knowledge needed to be successful.

Time: 12-2pm
Location: Sequim, WA; exact location to be shared upon registration

Audience: This class is for anyone interested in seed saving, from small farmers to backyard growers. It’s also for farmers who are curious about growing organic or in the process of transitioning to organic. The class is free and open to the public.

Topics for this first class will include:

-Organic seed production and organic seed saving methods
-Brief overview of botany
-How to plan for a successful seed crop
-Necessary isolation distances and population sizes
-Understanding cross pollination
-Introduction to hand pollination
-The nuts and bolts of harvest and processing (wet and dry seeded crops)
-Storage and maintenance of the seeds

This class will also include hands-on demonstration of either dry or wet seed saving and an overview of both methods. Materials from this first class will be available to participants who can only attend the part two class.

This class is a part of a series called Living on the Land Workshops, a program by WSU Regional Small Farms for Kitsap, Jefferson, and Clallam counties. Living on the Land Workshops are for people living on small acreage, backyard growers, and anyone interested in connecting with their local food systems.
