Join us for the 2025 San Juan Islands Agricultural Summit on Friday February 28th and Saturday March 1st. This year’s event will be held on Lopez Island and will consist of in-person workshops during the day and an evening community social at the Lopez Community Center on Friday, and an in-person conference day on Saturday at Lopez School.

This year’s theme, “Setting the Table for an Abundant Future,” is inspired by the name of the newly developed San Juan County Food System Plan, prepared by the San Juan County Food System Team. We will be collectively visioning the resilient food future we want to see in our county as well as learning tangible skills, practices, and tools you can use now.The CEO of Tree-Range Farms, Reginaldo Haslett-Marroquin, will give a keynote address discussing his whole-systems approach to agriculture to start the day on Saturday.

Online pre-registration is required for all paid events. Early bird tickets will be on sale December 16 through January 17, and regular registration will be open January 18 – February 21.

If you need housing, we will be providing a list of options for you to self-book, including some first-come first-serve discounts at local accommodations.

A limited number of scholarships will be available.

We are excited to share that Traditional Foodways, a cornerstone of the annual Agricultural Summit, will be in OICF’s GiveOrcas catalog Dec 3-12!

Traditional Foodways is much more than a gathering—it serves as a vital space where Indigenous leaders, local farmers, land stewards, and community members come together to foster meaningful dialogue and learning about traditional food systems and land stewardship practices.

In the coming days, we will share more information about how the event’s reach extends beyond the Ag Summit: inspiring year-round initiatives, long-lasting partnerships, meaningful collaboration, and tangible outcomes for the future of food and farming in our islands. Follow us on Instragram to learn more.

Thank you for considering a contribution to support this essential gathering!

2021 Ag Summit Overview

The Washington State University (WSU) San Juan County Extension Ag Program supports the vibrant farm community and food system of the islands by providing education on issues and topics important to agriculture and the communities in San Juan County. Program priorities are identified through community-based listening sessions, surveys, program evaluations and direct contacts. Ag Summits have been held annually since 2013, with a different program focus annually, developed by a steering committee that includes participation from both the community and university extension.

The 2021 San Juan Islands Agricultural Summit was a virtual event held in spring 2021 focused on equity in the San Juan County food system. Designed as a space for inspiration, education, and community building, the 2021 Summit brought together farmers, producers, and food system advocates to learn and discuss ways to build an equitable future for all involved in the San Juan County food system and beyond.

Sessions included:
  • White Supremacy Culture in Food Systems – Keynote
  • Creating Equitable Food Access Through Local Food Procurement
  • Black Agrarianism Series
  • Traditional Foodways in the San Juan Islands Series
  • Dolores Huerta Documentary and Film Panel
  • Local Solidarity Economy, Farming Co-ops, and Domestic Fair Trade
  • Indigenous Perspectives on Food, Land, and Environment

Duke University researcher Alison Conrad gave the keynote presentation, “White Supremacy Culture in Food Systems.” Her research explores white biases and white supremacy narratives in the food system, and she posits that these translate throughout that system.

The 2021 Summit may have passed, but the recordings remain available. The recordings include speaker presentations and the Q&A sessions that followed.

WSU Extension has a long history of providing quality and useful content to community members across the state. The views, thoughts, and opinions expressed by presenters at the SJI Ag Summit are their own and do not necessarily represent the views or policies of WSU.

2021 Ag Summit Keynote Speakers

Alison Conrad, Duke Sanford World Food Policy Center, Associate in Research

Keynote Address: White Supremacy Culture in Food Systems

Alison Conrad will speak on how whiteness and white dominant culture influence food system work, focusing on the pitfalls of how wealthy, white-led institutions apply their ideals to food policy and programming often aimed at non-white and low-income communities. Her research shows that white dominant beliefs and behaviors–assumed to be the norm–can put the emphasis of food work in the wrong place. As a consequence, we miss the opportunity to address the root causes of food systems issues and create lasting change. She will also discuss how individuals and organizations can start the process of unlearning a whitened history and related biases, and learn about how to work IN community instead of ON BEHALF OF community.

Some additional info about meeting participation:

  1. The Host should send you a meeting invitation with the log-on information, meeting name, and password.
  2. The Host may set-up the meeting so that when you enter, your mic will be mute. We don’t want to hear everyone fumbling with coffee, snacks and the like. If you want to speak, you will need to know how to turn on your mic. Hint: The arrow next to the Mute icon.
  3. Even for a small group, use the “Raise Hand” icon when you want to speak .

Windows:

Attendees have access to these features:

  • More: View non-verbal feedback icons (if enabled by the host). Tapping an icon will notify the host by placing the icon beside your name in the participants list. For example, Raise Hand places the raise hand icon beside your name and simulates a hand raise.

Best Practices while in a Class/Meeting – “Etiquette”

  • Sign into the Zoom desktop client and stay signed in.
  • Check your internet speed. If you’re on free WiFi you may need to keep your camera off to improve quality.
  • Turn your camera on and have your camera at eye level.
  • Stay muted unless you’re talking to reduce background noise.
  • Make sure you sit in a well-lit and quiet place.
  • Be mindful of what’s going on behind you. Think about having a solid wall behind you.
  • Raise your hand and wait for the host to acknowledge you before speaking.

Zoom Video Meeting User Tips

Mute your audio and turn off your camera by default

Diving for the mute audio and camera buttons as soon as you enter a meeting can get old. Keep fellow participants from seeing your bedhead or hearing your cat screeching by turning those off by default. To do it, go to Settings > Audio > Mute microphone when joining a meeting, and then Settings > Video > Turn off my video when joining a meeting.

Mute and unmute with the space bar

When you are called on to speak, stop scrambling to click the microphone button. You can press and hold the spacebar to quickly mute and unmute your mic, right from your keyboard.

React with emoji on screen

If you’re muted in a meeting, you can still let the hosts know your thoughts with emoji reactions. Send a “thumbs up” or a “clapping emoji” to communicate without interrupting the meeting (by default, those reactions have a yellow skin tone, but you can customize that on the Zoom desktop app).

To react during a meeting, click the Reactions tab at the bottom of the meeting screen (it’s in the same panel as mute audio and video, to the right) and choose the one you want. Emoji will disappear after 5 seconds.

If the meeting organizer enables the nonverbal feedback feature, participants can place an icon such as a raised hand next to their name to communicate. Every participant will be able to see each other’s feedback.

Turn on gallery view

Gallery view lets you see everyone in the meeting at once, instead of just the person speaking. To turn that on, click the tab that says “Gallery view” in the top right corner. If the meeting has 49 or fewer attendees, you’ll see all of their screens displayed on one page. If there are more, you’ll have the option to move between multiple pages. Change it back by clicking “Speaker view” in that same top right corner.
