Farm Transfer 101: Planning for the Future of your Farm in the San Juan Islands

May 26 @ 12:00 pm - 1:30 pm

Free

Date: Tuesday, May 26
Time: 12:00–1:30 PM
Location: Online (Zoom)

Farms in the San Juan Islands face unique opportunities and challenges when it comes to transition and succession—from high land values and limited availability to a strong culture of stewardship and community connection. This 1.5-hour webinar offers a practical, locally grounded introduction to the farm transfer process, whether you are planning ahead, navigating a current transition, or just beginning to explore your options.

Participants will learn key components of transferring land, operations, and knowledge—within or outside the family—including how to get started, common challenges, and how to approach financial, legal, and interpersonal aspects of transition planning. The session will also introduce tools for clarifying goals, aligning decisions with values, and building a transition team, along with resources available across Washington State.

The webinar will be led by Elizabeth Bragg of American Farmland Trust, who brings both professional expertise and lived experience navigating farm transition.

Who should attend:
• Farm owners beginning to think about succession
• Farmers currently navigating a transfer or lease transition
• Beginning farmers seeking access to land
• Families, partners, and others supporting farm transitions

Participants will leave with a clearer understanding of the farm transfer landscape and practical next steps to support a resilient future for their farm and the broader San Juan Islands agricultural community. This webinar is the first in a series designed to address local needs around farmland succession and access.
