Kids in the Kitchen

Explore science, math, and art with apples!

Letting your child help in the kitchen is a great way to create precious memories as they develop math skills (counting and measuring), develop small muscle movement, and eye-hand coordination.

Cut an apple into slices, then let your child help cut into chunks with a disposable plastic knife or other child-friendly safety knife tool. How many pieces can they make?

  • Slice an apple in half horizontally and ask your child to find the star shape.
  • Remove the seeds and count them. Talk about the seeds, explaining that they are “asleep” but with the right care will “wake and grow” into a big apple tree!
  • What color is an apple? How many different colors of apples have we seen?

How to Store Apples:

Apples are easy to store! You may store them without refrigeration for a week or more, or store them long term in the crisper drawer of the refrigerator where they may stay fresh for 1-2 months! Older, softer apples may be baked into a crisp or made into applesauce–which may be easily frozen, where it will stay fresh for 6+ months!
