AAUW PT hosts Aquatic Stewardship
November 18, 2017 @ 9:30 am - 11:00 am
Three women working with aquatic environments are to speak at the next AAUW Port Townsend meeting, which begins at 9:30 a.m., Saturday, Nov. 18 at the Elks Lodge, 555 Otto St.
Rebecca Benjamin of the North Olympic Salmon Coalition, Donna Frostholm of the Jefferson County Department of Community Development (DCD), and Caroline Gibson of the Northwest Straits Foundation are to give their perspectives on topics such as increasing the odds of salmon survival, protecting vital wetlands and restoring nearshore/marine habitat, according to a press release.
Benjamin is the executive director of the North Olympic Salmon Coalition, a nonregulatory nonprofit organization that works with willing landowners and government agencies. The coalition uses the efforts of volunteers to increase the odds of salmon survival, and foster community stewardship and education.
Gibson is executive director of the Northwest Straits Foundation, the nonprofit partner of the Northwest Straits Initiative. She has served on numerous regional advisory bodies, including the Forage Fish and Food Webs Work Group, Giant Pacific Octopus Advisory Committee and as alternate on the Puget Sound Partnership’s Ecosystem Coordination Board. She plans to talk about engaging conservation leaders in marine stewardship and provide a brief overview of the Northwest Straits Initiative.
