WSU Walla Walla County is pleased to partner with the WSU Extension offices in Asotin, Garfield, and Whitman Counties, University of Idaho Extension and the Walla Walla Community College Water & Environmental Center to bring you our Last Chance Pesticide Recertification classes.

 

You are invited to participate in the WSU/UI Pesticide Re-certification Credit Program on Friday, December 9th from 9:00 am to Noon; and 1:00 to 3:00 pm. 5 WSDA, 5 IDA and 5 ODA re-certification credits have been applied for. You will receive an email with an invitation, agenda, and instructions by December 8.

Two Pesticides are Better Than One” Delaying development of herbicide resistance in weeds, herbicide mixing, and rotation are critical. One of the 12 Best Management Practices (BMPs) for reducing risks of herbicide resistance is: Use multiple, effective MOAs [Mechanisms of Action] against most troublesome weeds and those prone to herbicide resistance. Discuss importance of using multiple MOAs to manage weeds and provide research results that support this important BMP.

“Downy Brome Control Beyond Group 2 Herbicides”

Focus on seed bank management, residual herbicides application, the value of crop rotation for Downy Brome Control.

 

1 11:00 – 12:00 Tim Prather- Univ of Idaho Extension Faculty

“Ventenata Management in Timothy Hay, Range and Pasture” Biology and management of Ventenata dubia in grass hay, range and pasture. Discuss use of labeled herbicides, harvesting and grazing practices that assist in managing ventenata. Attendees will learn to identify and manage as part of integrated weed management program.

“Monitoring Insect Pest to Reduce Impacts on Farm Profitability” Insect pests can affect crops with serious impacts on farm profitability. Not all insect pests are created equal and some cause more damage than others and some are not even “pests” at all! Insect damage can be confused with environmental factors, nutrient deficiencies and/or other disease symptoms. Recognize pest species and damage. Regular scouting (monitoring) to identify and determine the extent of emerging pest threats. Identify major pests like Wireworms, Hessian fly, Cereal Leaf Beetle, Aphids (especially the new Wheat Grass Aphid), Cabbage Seedpod Weevil in Canola and Pea and Leaf Weevils in Peas control at treatable levels.

“Identification and Management of Winter Wheat Diseases” Most common diseases of winter wheat in the Inland Pacific Northwest, including symptoms, epidemiology, and their management with cultural, chemical, and disease resistance strategies.
