The average American family spends $1,500 a year on food that doesn’t get eaten. You can learn to save money and the environment in your home and community at the FREE Save the Food Fest.

The Save the Food Fest is hosted by WSU Snohomish County Extension’s Sustainable Community Stewards, Agricultural Program, and SNAP-ED Program from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. on Saturday, April 5th at the Rosehill Community Center, located at 304 Lincoln Ave Ste 108.

The event is free and open to all Snohomish County residents, though a donation to the Mukilteo Food Bank is highly encouraged.

Event Details

Visitors can attend two workshops and participate in a host of educational activities during the event.

  • 11 a.m. – 12 p.m. Rosy Smit, Agricultural Coordinator for WSU Snohomish County Extension, will teach attendees to preserve and store food properly, including a demo of a quick pickling recipe anyone can do.
  • 12 p.m. – 1 p.m. Free time to partake in the Fest’s art and recipe contests, worm compost bin, kitchen supplies raffle, and trivia.
  • 1 p.m. – 2 p.m. Kellee Byard, program coordinator for the Sustainable Community Stewards, will explain how to create a waste-free kitchen at home and cooking with stems and ends to make delicious food from unexpected sources.
  • 2 p.m. – 3 p.m. Do any activities you didn’t have time for earlier as the event wraps up and contest/raffle winners are announced.

This event supports the state of Washington’s goal to cut food waste in half by 2030. “Research shows that people don’t like to waste food—and that learning a few simple strategies can help them to achieve that. This saves money, protects the environment, and helps to ensure that everyone in our communities has access to healthy food,” from Jade Monroe, lead for the Washington State Food Center.
