Plant Exchanges

We team up to grow seedlings for the Spring and to divide up our bulbs and perennials for the Fall, then offer them up for exchange for other plants!

Stevens County Plant Exchanges

Wood chips in the demo garden

Stevens County Master Gardeners have been hosting TWO Plant Exchanges each year for the past few years, one in the Spring and one in the Fall, held at the Firewise Demonstration Garden (in the Colville Community Garden).

Our motto:

  • Need a Plant, Take a Plant
  • Have a Plant, Give a Plant

While engaging in the community trading of garden plants (and houseplants), it is also a great time to “Ask a Master Gardener” your questions!

Broad plant selection, locally grown

Our plant exchange is the product of many volunteer master gardeners, pulling together to host a “Pop-up Nursery” two weekends per year.

Spring

Around February to March every year, our local group starts sowing vegetable seedlings and propagating houseplants to ensure a wide selection of items are available to Exchange in early May. We cannot guarantee what types of plants we will have available, as it depends on what is grown and whether the growing is successful and well-timed to be ready for the exchange.

Fall

Around July to August every year, our local group starts dividing up perennials, bulbs and tubers, as well as houseplants. Last year, we received a generous donation of several oak and walnut sapling trees, too! We will always provide season-appropriate items
