Know Your Government Conference

February 16, 2019 - February 19, 2019

What is KYG and Why Do We Have It?

Know Your Government (KYG) is a civic education program with a four-year rotating topic:  The Legislative System, The Judicial System, Elections and Party Platforms, and Politics and the Media. This year we will explore the topic of Politics and the Media. It is important to remember though, that KYG is much more than learning about how the Legislative process works.  In fact, one could argue that it is little about that.  KYG and 4-H are about learning the life skills our delegates will need to be responsible citizens and productive adults.  The conference is an opportunity for delegates to practice the skills they have learned, apply their knowledge to unknown situations and reflect on how they did.

Pre-conference meetings

Purpose: teach the skills, provide the tools, and prepare for the project at the KYG Conference.

Participants will learn how to work as part of a team, with people they may or may not know, to get the pre-conference objectives completed.  The pre-conference meetings are a way for delegates to hone these skills so when they get to the conference, they will be prepared to learn the new skills, practice and apply already learned skills, and work with more people they do not know in a mock trial setting. Perhaps even more important than this, they will have an experience that is similar (not necessarily identical) to those of other delegates. Similar experiences will provide a common foundation for all delegates, regardless of geographic, political or other differences.

Learning something new and working with other delegates with different perspectives can be uncomfortable.  Pre-conference meetings are a way to help delegates feel comfortable about what will be happening at the conference so they feel safe to experience something new.

The statewide conference in Olympia

Purposebring high school students from across the state to share ideas, concerns, and potential solutions to problems; to learn about Washington State government and how to become a positive contributing citizen; and to strengthen the connection between youth and our political and social networks through education, experience, application, and inspiration

A value of 4-H KYG is that it provides the opportunity for our delegates to explore new ideas and perspectives in a safe environment.  We encourage delegates with different views to work together, not to change each other’s minds, but to learn from each other.  Encouraging discussion when people disagree and providing an opportunity to explore the issue in a non-threatening way demonstrates to the delegates that they can disagree on an issue but still work together.  Ideally, these discussions will help delegates explore why they carry a certain belief and assist them in putting their own beliefs into practice. Remember, one of the intentional life skills we are focusing on this year is communication.

At the conference this year,

This year, participants will explore media and the use of media to inform others about a topic. Through pre-conference orientation, participants will work together to identify a community concern or issue. They will use this issue as the subject of their county project, building skills as they do research, conduct interviews, write posts, produce videos and recruit support towards solving the community concern. At the conference in February, delegates will discuss topics in a civil way and use various media to communicate their views on selected issues.

From pre-conference county meetings and conference participation, delegates will learn all or some of

the following:

❖ Identify a variety of media

❖ Recognize bias in the news

❖ Discern truth and validity of media reporting

❖ Value research

❖ Develop skills (interviewing, writing, teamwork, accountability, and research)

❖ Identify a problem in the community

❖ Gain the tools needed to contribute to community solutions

❖ How to use media as a change agent

❖ Discuss topics with people who have a different viewpoint in a civil and respectful way in order to share and learn new information

❖ Strengthen focused life skills: Critical Thinking -Self Responsibility – Positive Citizenship

Process for Registration

In using 4hOnline this year the Youth Delegates and Adult Resources will have two ways of going about making a payment for KYG Registration (Credit Card through 4-H Online or by Check). Start with going to your Profile and choosing Event Registration.

The Registration process is the same as last year through 4hOnline but when they get to the invoice they can choose to pay by Card or Check.

If the participant chooses to pay by Credit Card for the KYG Conference then they need to make the full payment at the end of registration process on 4-H Online. If the participant received a scholarship from the County, then the County is responsible for reimbursing the participant.

If the participant chooses to pay by Check for the KYG Conference then at the end of the registration process on 4-H Online they will be provided with an invoice amount that they owe. From this step participants will deliver their check to their County Coordinator or to the County Extension Office. At this point if the participant is receiving a discount from the County they may pay the appropriate amount due at that time.

County Coordinators and County Extension Office, before you confirm delegates Event registration, we are asking that you collect all the checks from your delegation keep track of all the money coming in. Once you have all the Conference Registration Checks we ask that you deposit those into your enrollment workshop account.

Important Note: When Registering for KYG Conference the same deadlines are in place for early/late registration and the refund policy remains the same. Meaning if your delegate or adult resource submits their KYG Application on 4-H Online after January 5th at 10pm then they will need to pay the late registration fee of $350.
