4-H Contests & Activities

Entry fees for the Modern Living building 4-H exhibits will be free.  All Entries due September 9, 2023. Download 4-H Contest & Activity Entry Form

4-H PUBLIC PRESENTATIONS.  All Yakima County 4-H’ers are invited to give a Public Presentation related to a project in which you are enrolled. Contest held in the Modern Living Building during the CWSF.  All 4-H Activities will be held on Saturday or Sunday, September 23, 24, 30 or October 1.  Entries need to be submitted by September 9. No late entries accepted. If you need accommodations during the week please specify and we will work with you. We will assign a time for your presentation.

4-H KITCHEN ACTIVITY is open to all 4-H members enrolled in Food Projects or Adventures in Family Living. You will be contacted to set up a time for this activity. Juniors prepare a recipe using guidelines in the Project Book. Intermediates and Seniors prepare a bread or canned/frozen product as in the County Food Activity or prepare a favorite food. Time is limited to 1 hour for activity in kitchen. Sign up early to reserve your time spot.

Participants need to turn in a recipe, include all of ingredients to the Superintendent at the time of your activity. Food demonstrations may not be duplicated as food preparation. You need to bring your own equipment and posters is that of the contestant and must be taken home the day of the activity, there is no storage available. Times will be assigned.

4-H PERFORMING ARTS / TALENT SHOW.  If more than one person is in the act, please list leader’s name and the name of your club on one form and list all members participating on the back.  Be sure to include first and last names, age, leader’s phone number and the act to be performed.  Use ONE FORM FOR EACH ACT!  You MUST check in at the Modern Living Building by 2:00 pm on Sunday, October 1.  This event starts promptly at 2:00 pm in the Modern Living Building.

4-H FASHION REVUE / CREATIVE CONSUMERS OF FASHIONActivity will be Sunday, October 1 at 2:00 pm. The clothes that are entered and on display at the fair will be available for you to model and a dressing area will be available.  Your commentary should include a description of your outfit, trims and/or accessories used, material you used, what you learned, the school you are attending and grade, and any other activities and interests you have!

Chili Contest New this year! Chili contest will be October 1. To Enter it is required to bring recipe and entry form on Sept 10. Limited to 20 people, if there is more interest and not 20 entries, it will be open to other youth. 4-H has priority. You will  need to bring all your own equipment and food ingredients you need to prepare and cook the chili.  WE HAVE TO HAVE A COPY OF THE RECIPE AND ENTRY FORM ON SEPTEMBER 10, so we can be sure to have enough room for all!  You will come in early on contest day (October 1) for prep and start the cooking.  All crockpots need to be plugged in by 11:00 am.  You can go enjoy the fair while the chili is cooking.  The judging and tasting will be done at 4:00 pm that day!  You must be here!!  You will have to talk to the judges during the judging time.  Awards will be announced at the end of the judging.

Table Setting Contest is a fun way to learn how to properly set a table, plan a nutritional meal, and express originality and creativity. Open to all 4-H Youth Members. The contestant will be required to fully set 1 table for an occasion selected by the contestant. Card tables will be used for the contest. A table will need to be provided by the contestant. The table should consist of a tablecloth or covering, plates, utensils, glasses or cups, a centerpiece, and a menu for your occasion. Your menu should include 3 items that are grown here in the Yakima Valley. Highlight those items in BOLD font on your menu. There will be two (2) categories for this event, include:

1. Casual-themed place settings could be planned for indoors or outdoors using any type of table cover (tablecloth, blanket, or paper) and any type of table service. Theme/Occasion examples: birthday party, family dinner, friends get together, harvest party, picnic, football watch party, etc.

2. Formal-themed place settings would include more than three (3) Theme/Occasion examples: Tea Party, New Years Eve, Christmas Dinner, Formal Birthday, etc. Judging: During judging you will present your table setting to the judge by telling them about your theme/occasion and why you chose it. You should view yourself as the host of the judge as your guest. Remember to extend a welcome to your judge and present your ideas behind your theme/occasion. *Please do no prepare food as this is a presentation only.*

Contestants will be judged based on this Table Setting Scorecard.


 

4-H had the best and most exhibits last year, so we have to try to do better this year. (To make the best better)! 4-H department has been moved to the Annex Area in the Modern Living Building.  This gives us much more room to fill with 4-H exhibits. No entry fee for 4-H exhibits in the 4-H section in the Modern Living Building.  All your entries are needed and much wanted.  Please bring ALL you have done this year.  We have room for everything you have and want to enter!  Let’s fill up the booths with 4-H exhibits. Bring your fair exhibits on September 9 from Noon to 5:00 pm.
