WSU Yakima County Extension Conference Room

2403 S 18th Street, Union Gap

Sarah Smith, WSU Extension Regional Animal Sciences Specialist, will be the evening’s speaker and will discuss basic animal behavior, low-stress safe handling guidelines, along with effective handling and training techniques.

The goal of this educational workshop is to provide participants with information on basic animal behavior, low-stress safe handling guidelines, and effective handling/training techniques.  Human safety, family dynamics, animal performance, meat quality and consumer perceptions all are impacted by the way livestock are handled at the various stages of production.

Individuals have been seriously injured and even killed while handling livestock.  In addition, many minor incidents and near misses to handlers often go unreported by individuals handling livestock.  Low-stress animal handling not only improves producer and human safety, morale and employee retention, but has also been proven to improve animal performance (growth, feed efficiency, and reproduction), health, meat quality and the public perception of the livestock industries.

This is a free workshop with a light dinner included to those who register by December 10.  Please contact Bonnie Abercrombie 509-574-1600, bonnie.abercrombie@co.yakima.wa.us.  Registration is limited to first 50 participants.
