About This Tree

This member of the magnolia family is a fast-growing deciduous tree that has distinctively shaped leaves and subtle but lovely, pale yellow flowers in late spring to early summer. It tends to grow tall and loves full sun. The foliage turns golden yellow in fall.

This Tree’s History

The Parker’s Landing Historical Park took its name from David C. Parker, who arrived in Oregon Country in 1844. In 1845, the Hudson’s Bay Company discouraged settlement on the north bank, having claimed the land for King George III. In spite of this, Parker was the first American to settle north of the Columbia River where he built his family cabin on the current site of Parker’s Landing. Over the years, property owners planted a variety of trees including a fruit orchard which was planted in 1940, and the tulip tree which may be more than 100 years old.

The park is located near the edge of the Columbia River at the Port of Camas-Washougal (who also owns the tree). It is accessible by foot, car or wheelchair, and viewable from a public street. There are restaurants and a boat launch nearby.
