Comparison: Master Gardener Program and Master Gardener Foundation of Clark County

Serving the community TOGETHER since 1984.

Two activities in Clark County work together to provide Master Gardener volunteers: The WSU Extension Clark County Master Gardener Program and the Master Gardener Foundation of Clark County. Our names sound similar and each group provides its own expertise toward the success of Master Gardening in our county.

Read below to learn about what each organization does to further our mutual goals.

Master Gardener Program

A program of Washington State University.

Purpose

The WSU Master Extension Gardeners program trains volunteers to be effective community educators in gardening and environmental stewardship.

Leadership:

A full-time staff coordinator reports to WSU Extension faculty and collaborates closely with the Washington State Master Gardener program.

Members:

About 300 trained, certified volunteers.

Programs Include:

  • Master Gardener Volunteer Training
  • Three Demonstration Gardens in Clark County
  • “Ask a Master Gardener” Answer Clinic
  • Community Workshops at the demonstration gardens, in libraries, at garden clubs, and elsewhere
  • Regular displays at Farmers Markets and other horticulture-related activities
  • Clark County Fair Exhibit

Why and How to Support the WSU Extension Master Gardener Program:

Options include:

  • Make a gift to the WSU Extension Clark County Master Gardener Endowment. A gift here will be invested with other donations. Each year, a portion of the endowment is used for operating funds for the Master Gardener program in our county.
  • Join or make a gift through the Master Gardener Foundation of Clark County (or both). The Foundation allocates a significant portion of its annual revenue for Clark County Master Gardener program operations. For more information, see below.
  • Shop at the Master Gardener Foundation’s Mother’s Day Plant Sale, as proceeds benefit the Master Gardner Program. Check the MGFCC website for more details beginning around April 1.

Master Gardener Foundation of Clark County

A 501(c)(3) non-profit organization.

Purpose:

The Master Gardener Foundation of Clark County is a nonprofit that raises funds to support Master Gardener education programs and community projects.

The Master Gardener Foundation of Clark County (MGFCC) provides significant financial and in-kind support to the Master Gardener Program and modest funding for other community horticulture programs in Clark County.

Leadership:

A nine-member, elected board of directors and an appointed executive administrator manage the Foundation. All of these positions are voluntary and unpaid.

Members:

Dues-paying individuals, families, and businesses.

Programs Include:

  • Providing a significant source of annual operating funds for the Master Gardener Program
  • Mother’s Day Weekend Plant Sale
  • I-5 Welcome Sign Planting
  • MGFCC Clothing and Apparel Sales
  • Modest grants to other community-based educational programs in horticulture

Why Support the Foundation:

The Master Gardener Foundation makes annual distributions for the Clark County Master Gardener Program.

Current certified Master Gardeners can also volunteer with the Foundation to assist with the annual plant sale, with proceeds benefitting the Clark County Master Gardner program.
