History/Information

This cedar’s name, Deodar, derives from Sanskrit that translates to “timber of the gods.” The tree is native to the Himalayas, where it has been known to reach 250′ tall. It was introduced to Europe in 1822 and to the United States nine years later. It is the national tree of Pakistan.

The owners had an arborist look at the tree a few years back. He said it was in good shape with no rot. The owner thinks it must have come over by boat and then wagon to its current site. The tree grows up to two feet a year.

The owners were told that it was between 100 and 200 years old. It is shown in photographs from the 1940s which show this area as all farm land. Darcy is a name associated with a family in the nearest house at that time. An old timer in the neighborhood thought it might have been planted to commemorate a person’s death or where a horse is buried.
