Kitsap Farmers Fighting Hunger – A Community Solution to Food Insecurity

Hunger is on the rise in Kitsap County. Today, more than 22,000 people in our community rely on food assistance—and that number continues to grow. Fresh, local food is essential for our food banks, but recent funding cuts have left a critical gap. USDA programs that once enabled food banks to purchase produce from local farms have been abruptly ended, leaving both farmers and families in need.

The good news? A solution is here.

Local farmers, WSU Kitsap Extension, and Kitsap Conservation District have joined forces to launch the Kitsap Farmers Fighting Hunger campaign. This effort connects community generosity with local agriculture to ensure fresh, nutritious food reaches the tables of those who need it most.

Here’s how it works:

  • Your donation matters. Every dollar given through the WSU Foundation goes directly to purchasing local farm products for distribution to Kitsap area participating food banks.
  • Farmers thrive, neighbors are nourished. This program supports small farms by providing predictable income while ensuring equitable food access for all.
  • Strengthening our local food system. By keeping dollars local, we build resilience and sustainability for our community.

Farmers like Jen Clark of Roots Farm share why this matters:

Equitable food access is our mission—hunger relief puts that value directly on our neighbors’ tables. Partnering with food banks give us predictable income and a way to serve our community. Healthy food is a right, not a privilege.”

When you give, you’re not just donating—you’re investing in a healthier, stronger Kitsap County. Together, we can close the gap and make sure everyone has access to fresh, nutritious food.
