With heartfelt gratitude and sadness, we share that the SNAP-Ed program will conclude statewide on October 1st, 2025, marking the end of a meaningful chapter in the state’s—along with Kitsap County’s—commitment to nutrition education and community wellness.
For many years, SNAP-Ed has been a trusted resource for families and organizations throughout our region. Through interactive lessons and hands-on activities, the program has empowered youth and adults to make informed choices about healthy eating and active living.
The loss of federal funding for SNAP-Ed is felt deeply across Washington. In response, Washington State University (WSU) is working to support affected employees and help county Extension offices navigate this transition with care and compassion.
WSU Extension is proud of the legacy of SNAP-Ed programming. This initiative has provided real, on-the-ground support to communities that need it most. Its impact will continue to resonate in Kitsap County and beyond, thanks to the relationships built and the lives touched.
As we prepare to say goodbye to SNAP-Ed, we want to take a moment to celebrate the incredible people behind the program. Julie Evenson and Dawn-Marie Duarte have been the heart and soul of WSU SNAP-Ed in Kitsap County. Their dedication, warmth, and passion have inspired healthier lifestyles, strengthened community partnerships, and made a lasting difference in countless lives.
Julie and Dawn-Marie have given so much of themselves to this work, and their absence will be deeply felt. If you’ve had the pleasure of working with them or benefiting from their programs, we invite you to reach out and share your appreciation, memories, and well wishes as they transition from this role. Let’s send them off with the same kindness and support they’ve shown our community over the years.
Thank you to everyone who contributed to the success of SNAP-Ed. Though the program is ending, its spirit of service, education, and community will live on.
With Gratitude,
Jess Sappington
Director, WSU Kitsap Extension
