A gorgeous garden that flourishes all year long in Western Washington can be tricky, especially on the Olympic Peninsula. Our climate, microclimates, water and soil can be demanding and changeable, so it’s important for gardeners to “know before you grow.” Join gardening pros David Whiting and Jeff de Jong for the Green Thumb Education Series presentation “Forty Plants, Four Seasons” and find out how you create a thriving, interesting garden year-round.

David and Jeff will look at 40 plants for a multi-season garden that have performed well in their own Port Angeles green spaces. Some plants are common while many are more unusual and strikingly different.

“Selecting the right plant for the right place is sometimes rather simple, while other times very complex,” David said. David and Jeff will discuss selecting plants suitable for the northern Olympic Peninsula’s climate and soil and how to take advantage of microclimates and plant challenges to create a lovely four-season garden.

David is an avid gardener and retired Professor and Extension Consumer Horticulture Specialist in the Department of Horticulture and Landscape Architecture at Colorado State University. David has spent most of his professional career at the county or state level leading Master Gardener Programs. Jeff is a Horticultural Instructor with University of Victoria Continuing Education in British Columbia, Canada. He is also host of Gardening 101 on CFAX 1070 AM in Victoria, B.C., is a garden speaker and writer as well as a tour guide leader for the Clallam County Master Gardeners’ Petals and Pathways Garden Tour.

Adirondack chairs are a welcome addition to a multi-layered landscape. It pays to know before you grow. Find out how you can create your own beautiful four-season garden.
