Do your mustard greens resemble Swiss cheese, pocked with little holes and a lot of sadness? Flea beetles are the likely culprits, and these little buggers have a big appetite! The 2024 Green Thumb Education Series presentation “Flea Beetles” will be held in person on Thursday,  April 25th from noon – 1:00 p.m. at

Saint Andrew’s Episcopal Church, 510 E Park Ave, in Port Angeles and will be broadcast live via Zoom.

Some flea beetle species are common pests of kale, broccoli and tender greens in the brassica family, while others love potatoes and tomatoes. Laurel will help you learn all about these garden insects, including how to identify them, what kind of damage to look for and how to manage them. Gardeners who attend this lecture will come away with knowledge and skills to use Integrated Pest Management techniques to prevent or minimize damage to their vegetable crops using methods that are the least harmful to the environment and other organisms.

Laurel has been a Master Gardener since 2006 and received her master’s degree in horticulture with a minor in entomology from Oregon State University in 2011. She is currently a member of the WSU Extension Integrated Pest Management Team and spends her time outside of Master Gardeners helping small farms in Clallam, Jefferson and Kitsap Counties to accurately identify pests and crop diseases while developing plans to manage them sustainably. She enjoys sharing her enthusiasm for insects and growing food with the community

The Green Thumb Education Series, sponsored by the Washington State University Clallam County Master Gardeners, is held on the second and fourth Thursday of each month through October. In November, December, and January, one lecture is offered. Scheduled presentations are subject to change. Visit the WSU Extension Clallam County website calendar for the latest information on upcoming presentations. For questions, call 360-565-2678.
