Green Thumb – A History of Coffee

July 27, 2023 @ 12:00 pm - 1:00 pm

Free

There’s nothing quite like a fresh cup of coffee—the aroma, the swirl of the cream, the first sip….aaaah, Hello Morning! But there are a lot of steps in between the first sprouts of a coffee plant and that delicious morning joe. Java-philes and casual coffee drinkers alike can get a deeper awareness for that beautiful bean by joining Clallam County Master Gardener Margery Whites for the Green Thumb Education Series presentation:

“A History of Coffee.”

The Green Thumb Education Series presentation “A History of Coffee” will be held in person on Thursday, July 27th from noon – 1:00 p.m. at the Port Angeles Library’s Carver Room, 2210 S. Peabody St. in Port Angeles. Or you may join via Zoom.

Find a direct link to the live presentation here.

Or join by phone: 253-215-8782

Meeting ID: 936 2989 8830

Passcode: 676224

Margery will talk about the coffee plant itself, where it is grown and how it is processed and roasted. She will also touch on how climate change is affecting coffee production and its growers. “I hope [the presentation] will develop an increased appreciation of the coffee plant, trade, and roasting,” Margery said.

Margery started roasting her own coffee at home. “I learned to roast coffee in 2001 while studying Spanish in Guatemala. This led to an ongoing friendship with a coffee perfectionist who owns a coffee shop in Antigua, Guatemala,” she said. Margery has been a Master Gardener since 2016. She moved here from Minnesota in 2015 and is enjoying the marine climate with its milder temperatures and minimal temperature swings.

The Green Thumb Education Series, sponsored by the Washington State University Clallam County Master Gardeners, is held on the second and fourth Thursday of each month through October. In November, December, and January, one lecture is offered. Scheduled presentations are subject to change. Visit the WSU Extension Clallam County website calendar for the latest information on upcoming presentations. For questions, call 360-565-2678.
