Candice has been a professional flower farmer and floral designer for four years, a Master Gardener for 13 years and an avid gardener for over 50 years. She and her partner Peter Gariss own Gariss Gardens, a Port Townsend flower farm that grows an acre of flowers and perennials, boasting nearly 350 different varieties. “At the gardens I am the floral designer and number one farm hand. I help select which varieties we grow, seed, transplant, harvest, weed and do the floral arranging,” she said.

Candice will share flower fundamentals on how to maximize the blooming season in your own yard, how to increase your flower yields and how to harvest what you’ve grown for vase longevity.

Candice was born in Washington and was raised in a gardening family on the east side of Seattle. After earning a Master’s Degree in Fine Arts from the University of Washington, she

moved to Chimacum to build a log house, carve a garden out of the forest and to raise a family. She remains there 50 years later. “Growing plants has always been a magnet for me and I’ve tended gardens for food and beauty since way back,” she said. “I’ve had two happy careers…but this third and final one, that of a flower farmer, brings a joy that money can’t buy.”

The Green Thumb Education Series, sponsored by the Washington State University Clallam County Master Gardeners, is held on the second and fourth Thursday of each month through October. In November, December, and January, one lecture is offered. Scheduled presentations are subject to change.
