Growing Tomatoes in the Pacific Northwest
June 15, 2019 @ 10:00 am - 11:00 am
“Growing Tomatoes in the Pacific Northwest” on Saturday, June 15
Has our short growing season frustrated your efforts to grow vine-ripened tomatoes? Are you left with grass-green tomatoes on tree-like bushes at the end of the summer? Don’t give up! You can grow tomatoes successfully in the Pacific Northwest.
On Saturday, June 15, from 10-11 am, Clallam County Master Gardeners Audreen Williams, Laurel Moulton, Jan Bartron, and Jeanette Stehr-Green will share tips on growing tomatoes in our short growing season. The presentation is part of the “Saturdays in the Garden” educational series and will be held at the Master Gardener Demonstration Garden in Sequim.
During the presentation, participants will learn what varieties grow best in our area, how to plant tomatoes to optimize available heat and how to protect them from the cold. Participants will also learn how to care for tomato plants through the growing season to prevent diseases and encourage fruit production. The training will include demonstrations on planting and pruning tomato bushes and displays on season extenders, trellises and common tomato problems.
By attending this presentation, local gardeners will learn the tricks necessary to produce vine-ripened tomatoes in their own backyard, something money can’t buy.
The Master Gardener Demonstration Garden is located at 2711 Woodcock Road in Sequim, WA. The garden demonstrates a broad range of ornamental and edible plants, water-wise gardening, fire safe landscaping, composting and garden design. The Demonstration Garden has a covered outdoor pavilion where educational programs are held from May through October.
“Saturdays in the Garden” presentations are free and open to the public and occur rain or shine. For more information about the series or the presentation on growing tomatoes call 360-565-2679.
