Info and Tips

New employees will receive a notification through Workday letting them know that they need to make their benefit elections within the 31-day election window. This applies to new Civil Service, Administrative Professional, and Nonpermanent employees.

Below are some commonly asked questions on benefits for employees. We’ve provided tips and links that may help answer questions you might have. If you have questions that haven’t been answered below, please reach out to us at ebot.support@wsu.edu.

Nonpermanent Non-scheduled (NPNS) and Nonpermanent Schedule (NPS) temporary employees cannot fully decline health benefits – only the medical coverage portion. Dental, vision, basic LTD, and basic life are all mandatory for employees determined to be eligible. The department will incur the costs of health insurance, regardless of whether the employee waives the medical coverage. View more information at the HRS Benefits Eligibility webpage.

Yes, Nonpermanent employees can become eligible for benefits even if their FTE is below 50%:

  • upon the initial appointment,
  • based on the work pattern, or
  • if they are a recurring seasonal employee.

For more information, see the HRS Temporary/Seasonal Employee Benefits webpage.

Coverage starts on the first day of the month following the start date, unless the appointment begins on the first working day of the month, in which case eligibility/benefits will begin on that date.

For example:

  • If your appointment begins on January 13, 2020 – your benefits would begin the first of the month following the date of employment, on February 1, 2020.
  • If your appointment begins on February 3, 2020 – this is the first working day of the month, and your benefits would begin on February 3, 2020.

More information can be found at the HRS New Employees webpage.
