Continuing Education (CE):

Volunteers must earn a certain number of hours (10 hours for certified mgs and 5 hours for emeritus mgs) continuing education per year to be considered for reapplication. CE must be reported when earned. Program coordinators must preapprove continuing education and may limit certain categories of continuing education. Continuing education does not count toward a volunteer’s internship or their volunteer hours.

The purpose of continuing education is to improve volunteers’ knowledge and skill base for performing work as community educators in horticulture and environmental stewardship.

What qualifies for continuing education?
o Horticultural courses given by WSU, including retaking basic Master Gardener training.
o Webinars, field trips, and workshops sponsored by Extension.
o Classes offered by accredited institutions: community colleges, technical colleges, universities.
o WA State Department of Agriculture approved pesticide classes.
o Classes taught by professional associations, such as Washington State Nursery and Landscape Association, Washington Association of
Landscape Professionals, International Society of Arboriculture, etc.
o Time spent doing research preparing a Master Gardener presentation which is then delivered to the community (limit of four times the length of the presentation).
o Time spent doing research for a newspaper or Master Gardener newsletter article which is then published (limit of four hours).
o Other activities, including training on how programs are planned, delivered, or evaluated; presentation skills; meeting facilitation; etc., may qualify.

Contact your program coordinator for preapproval before reporting or enrolling.

What does not qualify for continuing education?
o Trips and tours not preapproved by the program coordinator.
o Garden craft or photography classes.
o Personal research, reading, viewing not related to a WSU Master Gardener project or presentation.
o Travel time to and from events.
o Anything outside the state of Washington unless preapproved by the State WSU Master Gardener Program Leader.

The Continuing Education (CE) Team would love to have you join our great group!

We have a great time doing what we do, Veterans and Interns alike!

  • We create CE offerings each month by choosing experts to teach us the latest and best about important MG topics
  • We are “hosts” at these CE offerings
  • We put on an annual all-day Workshop From the Ground and Up each summer with many experts presenting. This event is great fun and does take a good number of MGs to put it on.

If you like gardening topics, gaining knowledge, or just helping a super group, please give me a call or email me. Beth Gray Continuing Education, Chair 253-905-5210 | grayb6060@gmail.com
