The Importance of Fairs for 4-H Youth

Kitsap County 4-H youth participate in the Kitsap Fair & Stampede to showcase the knowledge, skills and achievements they have made with their project throughout the year to the public.

County fairs and 4-H programs are intrinsically linked, the fair serves as a culmination of the 4-H youth’s learning and development in hands-on projects throughout the year. The fair provides a platform for 4-H members to showcase their projects, gain recognition for their efforts, and develop valuable life skills.

Here’s a more detailed look at their relationship:

4-H as the Foundation:

  • 4-H is a youth development program that emphasizes experiential learning and practical skills in areas like agriculture, science, health, arts, and civic engagement.
  • Members engage in projects guided by adult volunteer mentors.
  • The “learn by doing” motto of 4-H is exemplified through the fair, where members apply their knowledge and skills with the public.

The Fair as the Showcase:

  • The county fair is a public venue where 4-H members display their projects.
  • It allows members to receive recognition for their hard work and achievements.
  • The fair offers a setting for 4-H youth to interact with the community and share their experiences working with/in their project areas.

Key Benefits for 4-H Members:

  • Skill Development: Participating in the fair helps 4-H members develop crucial skills like project management, public speaking, and leadership.
  • Goal Setting and Hard Work: 4-H motivates members to set goals, work diligently, and learn from their experiences.
  • Community Involvement: The fair fosters a sense of community and allows members to share their achievements with others.
  • Lifelong Friendships: 4-H leads to lifelong friendships.

Examples of 4-H Projects at the Fair:

  • Animal Projects: 4-H Members may show livestock like cattle, goats, horses, sheep, swine and llamas and/or small animals like cats, dogs, rabbits, cavies, and poultry using their skill and knowledge to demonstrate how to care, breed, market, and handle their animals.
  • Still Life Projects: Members may display crafts, art, or other handcrafted items, photography, cooking, sewing, plant sciences and assorted STEM projects for youth to showcase their creativity and skills.
  • Public Presentations: 4-H Members may give speeches or demonstrations to share their project knowledge and/or participate in 4-H in Action to demonstrate their knowledge and skills on the spot with the public.
