Bainbridge Beach Exploration
April 29, 2017, 12:45 pm - 2:30 pm
FreeThe amount of structure available for marine species at our ferry terminals provides great opportunities for an array of creatures to be found. The photo shows this beach when we had hundreds of sea stars clinging to every surface under the loading dock. After the onset of the wasting syndrome, they began to melt away until there were fewer than a dozen stars in the vicinity. During the winter we noted some restoration of the population, and it will be interesting to see if more have returned to this site. In addition to sea stars, this beach offers many species of crabs, clams, anemones and often several other surprises.
Please plan to join us to share your insights and expertise (or hone even sharper skills) with members of the public who come to learn more about our shoreline environment.
Park in Winslow on Brien or Bjune, walk across the Winslow Ravine on the bridge, and follow the footpath by the ferry work yard. The trail to the beach continues across the street, alongside the condos. Bring your identification materials (cards, books) and let’s see what the new season has brought to this beach.
